Warning: People Participating In Discords Will Be Banned

163 posts in this topic

The user experience of this forum sucks ass, thats the problem.

You cant have a conversation with someone, if you are only allowed to send a message every two minutes.

If you spent half the time you worry about people leaving actually improving this site, there would be no such problem.

I'd argue almost the opposite of this. In order to have a conversation on discord you need to be constantly engaging, checking what's posted to keep up with what's going on. Rapid fire chatting like discord allows for is great for small friend groups or real time events and many other things, but intellectual conversations among multiple users, anything requiring depth of thought, long considered paragraphs ect, becomes far more difficult. And the larger the discord the more of a clusterfuck it becomes. The most frequent and enthusiastic posters become seen as the "leaders" of the community, but these people are the ones who are also the most addicted to posting and are more likely to lead less healthy lifestyles if they can afford to be posting nonstop on discord all the time. It's antithetical to the purposes of this forum.

Fair enough, but there is obviously demand for some kind of casual "rapid fire chatting" and if you cant supply it, you should not be surprised when people seek it out elsewhere.

Chat is difficult to moderate.

Be careful being too demanding in relationships. Relate to the person at the level they are at, not where you need them to be.

I tend to type slower so that 2 minute minimum isn't an issue to me.

@Leo Gura What type of discord are we not allowed to participate in the future? Like the discords found in the streaming community, aka Destiny, Vaush, and so forth? Is it all types of discord? Asking for clarity, and I don't even participate in chat groups as my fingers are too slow and am not part of the chatter/streaming community.

@Danioover9000

Leo is not restricting you from joining random discord groups, but stealing people from one group to another one is just wrong.

Who told you that "others" are real?

The more time I spent in "The Journal", the precursor to the Discord, the more I felt that the forum was going downhill. I don't think that was about the people I was talking to as much as the tendency towards a shorter format and more casual topics. The most enjoyable thing about this forum for me is spending a long time formulating my thoughts as best as I can. If I want to be social, I go talk to actual people.

Just because there’s demand doesn’t mean it’s healthy or productive. Short form chat is more chaotic, heated and emotional and it’s much easier for people to have their emotional state pumped up, which is a precursor for brainwashing and cults forming.

It sounds extreme but the field this forum is in (spirituality) attracts people who get sucked into things like that. There have been a few suicides related to people essentially misinterpreting teachings for example. So it’s no laughing matter and lack of moderation + chaotic, emotional chats can have serious consequences.

Put that way, I can see why a discord of that type is problematic.

This is the intended function of the forum format. You're forced to think longer before replying. There are pros and cons to live conversations and forum conversations.

Well, it's not surprising, which is why there is already preemptively a rule clearly saying that Discords aren't allowed. It's expected.

At the same time, there's a line to be drawn between seeking casual live chats elsewhere, and creating a subsection of this community by taking Actualized.org members to a Discord server. You can do the former without the latter.

This isn’t something that I have been personally involved with, though I noticed discussion of it whilst posting in “The Journal.” I think it was started by @thisintegrated and later joined by @AtheisticNonduality as well as probably some other people. I don’t know so much about the former user but neither of them strike me as people who would want to sabotage this forum or steal your followers. My impression is that they just wanted a space to discuss their views in a more private and efficient way. The open forum encourages a lot of lame posturing and grand-standing, making big statements about things rather than just having a friendly discussion. It’s also much slower than other messaging services.

In other words, even if it might have been against the rules, I don’t think they were using Discord to sow discord! Obviously what I think is more or less irrelevant here but I don’t think it should be necessary to ban them.

Yeah, exactly. I mostly only write anything on here so as to clarify/distil my own thoughts on something. Socialising with pixels on a screen gets a bit lonely after a while…

oh I may have clicked one link from a member's description, just to check it out.

I don't use discord, nor am I interested in using it.

Half the members on the discord aren't even from the forum.  I'm literally introducing new people to Actualized, and all Leo's uploads automatically show up on the discord.  Idk why Leo's so mad, he should be thanking me if anything.

(Before anyone thinks I'm advertising, all invites are revoked.  Noone on this forum can get inside, even if they try.)

He already gave me warning points.

I'm surprised.  We basically stopped debating pointlessly once everyone started using The Journal.  It was, overall, a very positive place.  It went downhill only once it started getting attacked on a daily basis.  It was fun while it was just me and the regulars/mods.

You mean the mental masturbation & endless debate (which is against the rules btw) that's one of the biggest problems on the forum?

As Oeehoo pointed out, the slowness of the forum encourages leaving statements, rather than actually discussing anything.  I, personally, see this as a major downside to the forum format.  Moreover, Leo ignored my countless suggestions for removing the post-rate-limit for non-mods. We must wait 3 whole minutes, sometimes longer, to post again after posting.  I mean, doesn't Leo wanna be at least on par with AoB?

I kind of agree with this. I wish there was a more casual place to chat about this kind of stuff.

Well you're not alone in this view.

That's why I risked a ban and my reputation on here to do this for y'all^_^

Was well worth it.

Maybe there should be a casual chat board?

Leo seemingly didn't like any of my suggestions, so I went all stage Red on him for a moment and got everyone on the discord.

Leo won't touch the forum is the message he's given me, and everyone else, repeatedly.

Unless you do something yourself, it won't happen.
