Culture Openmindedness Mega-Thread

55 posts in this topic

I'd like to make a thread that shares and explores exotic cultures around the world, in the spirit of raising our openmindedness to and appreciation of the rich cultural diversity beyond standard vanilla Western culture. There are many great examples to be shared.

Stuff like this:

I want to see examples here of exotic and weird cultural norms and habits.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

Lots of good stuff from Gordon Ramsay's Great Escape series

"God is not a conclusion, it is a sudden revelation. When you see a rose it is not that you go through a logical solipsism, 'This is a rose, and roses are beautiful, so this must be beautiful.' The moment you see it, the head stops running thoughts. On the contrary, your heart starts running. It is something totally different from the idea of truth." -Osho

Food is the best way to learn about culture. It is hands-on.

But let's not turn this into a gross-out food thread. We've all seen those gross-out food videos. It's not really about exploring culture so much as shock value.

One thing I really like is finding little examples of two cultures that you wouldn't usually except to mix together coming together in a cool new hybrid culture. Here's an example of Jewish Ethiopians:

It shows me that cultures are more inter-connected than we assume and that absolute borders between identities don't exist. There's thousands of these unique hidden cultures around the world that don't fall easily into more mainstream categories of identification.

I recommend a movie called samsara. It's a film about the different cultures on the planet. Truly eye opening and shocking at times.

Here is a clip from it:
