Why are politicians so low conscious?

17 posts in this topic

Why do the people who lead us have such a low level of spiritual development? Is there some sort of dynamic going on that leads politicians to develop that kind of thinking or some reason they are drawn towards those types of careers. (as compared to entrepreneurs, artists ect.. that often have a much better view on how the world should be and are at a higher level (on the spiral dynamics scale or similar categorization)

Because they are extremely self serving greedy narcissistic assholes who fool idiotic people into thinking that they are doing a great service to the nation.

They cater to the most ignorant sub section of the society..

Also. Greed and selfishness turns anyone into the most blood sucking low conscious scum individual.

No hope there

Selfishness is a destructive path, no gains other than fake wealth.

Just politicians??

The right to do worse seems to be installed EVERYWHERE and your best friend today will be wuick to stab you in the back tomorrow.

Nonetheless, why do politicians get elected by those same people they're planning to exploit & instrumentalize?...

One plausible answer is education failure.

P.S.:  Ah, and even when educated there's no vaccine against imbelicity.

The real reason for this is that societies aren't consciously chosen by their citizens. They aren't consciously created by their citizens, rather, they unconsciously evolve. What this means is that people are fighting each other for power. This means that the most ruthless, power-hungry, ambitious, strong-willed people will rise to the top and others won't, not because they are better people, but because they lack the personal strength to do so.

We have not reached a point yet where people consciously take responsibility for the society they're living in, much less act according to it. When we do reach that point and when individual human beings do start taking responsibility for the collective, the people in leadership positions will indeed be the most loving, compassionate, capable people.

Top positions have high attention trade-offs. You have a limited amount of attention, and getting to the top of a field requires deep specialization, which means prioritizing one thing over another and narrowing your focus. In other words, attention trade-offs generally skew towards analysis and away from holism.

Another example would be career scientists. They've invested so much time and attention into looking very closely at some very particular details (analysis) that they lose the big picture view (holism; metaphysics, epistemology). High consciousness and spirituality is fundamentally holistic.

All the incentives are for the most selfish, manipulative, ruthless, and power-hungry people to win elections.

Selfishness is rewarded. Selflessness is not.

It's an arms race scenario. The most ruthless guy wins. If you go into an election sticking to truth, empathy, kindness -- you will lose. Because your oponent will viciously demonize you as weak. And selfish voters want projections of power to match their own tastes.

Selfishness begets selfishness.

Ignorance begets ignorance.

You have to realize that most people, (some of us here included) would technically fall under spiral dynamic stage orange. A part of that means being very opportunistic. Yes, there are politicians like AOC, bernie, and Ro Khanna who do push policies that one could say fall under "green", but this is relatively rare in this country. Also the large sums of donations these politicians receive does not help at all, as once you accept a donation, you have some what of an "obligation". I think its just that mainstream society is orange, and politicians, or anyone for that matter, will act according to those tendenancies.

To be honest, I don't care about the selfish nature of our politicians. All humans are selfish and manipulative, even those who claim that they're enlightened.

For us to be alive, we must be a little bit selfish. That's our fundamental nature and it keeps us alive.

We keep baffling about change and hope for the future, but at the same time, we don't take into account that every generation has its own, unique problems.

Regardless of our low-conscious politicians, don't be too concerned with them, as you'll waste years of life and stifle your potential.

It would only make sense for a well-known politician to appeal to the lowest common denominator

No highly realized person will want to go into politics, it's a shit show.

It's like you trying to win an argument with bunch of 5 year olds, there's no point.

I think the best kind of people we can get in politics right now are Elon Musk types, people who are very much into materialist paradigm but are driven by positive motivations of moving humanity forward. I think we will see these types of people in politics in near future.

@Beeflamb I know I've said this a million times, but I suggest you read a book called, "Chaung Tzu's parables". It's a taoist book from a disciple of Lao Tzu. Believe it or not, around the time Confucius and Lao Tzu was debating with their ideas, they were not viewed as debates of life philosophies but of different political ideologies waiting to take charge of becoming the main political system of ancient Chinese factions.

I don't think OSHO was completely against politics as Chuang Tzu was, too. Chuang Tzu, like OSHO, continuously bashed on politicians and confucius ideas, which was the prominent social etiquette at the time, presenting that only a leader of Tao is able to govern a state to its utmost potential. The question is, though, will the leader really be able to adopt the Tao? He says one of the requirements of a leader to become prominent is that he should not thirst after power, again bashing on Confucianists idealogy that a leader should live for honor, glory, and prestige until his death.

At first, I never was able to accept the idea that the Tao Te Ching and The Chuang Tzu's Parables were books presented to help political leaders, but, now, after reading them carefully, I could see why they were saying the books were that way. Chuang Tzu was never really hating on those politicians as was OSHO. It's just the 'way' they were governing their country, they had a problem with.

The Catch 22 is that while we need Conscious Politicians in order to successfully deal with the innumerable challenges we're facing as a Society, it's also true that running for Political Office is often the path of most rather than least Resistance for gifted people who want to contribute to Society. There's only so much that a highly conscious person is going to be able to achieve working within the confines of a system that's far less developed than that individual. Rather than a Conscious Individual elevating the political system that they're participating in, it just as likely that a principled individual will be dragged down and accept some level of corruption as the cost of doing business, or end up losing heart and leaving politics.

Someone like Bill Gates is doing far more to reduce suffering world running an anti-poverty NGO than he could ever hope to accomplish if he ran for President. Mikhail Gorbachev is quite instructive in this regard as well, as we can look to the difficulties he faced when trying to enact Principled change on a Political Culture that was substantially less developed than he was, resulting in a return to Authoritarianism after has departure.
