No. So we don't get the toxic shit like this anywhere. Banning them everywhere is a much nicer alternative to burning them at the stake or beheading like it was just a few centuries ago

I dont think its wrong to try and silence hategroups, but problem here is that Qanons main communication happens in sites like 4chan and discord channels.

Banning them from Facebook does jack shit against their operation. "Anon" groups originate from 4chan, and I doubt the apple has fallen far from the tree. All this does is that it make these groups and their operation harder to track, and their troll campaigns harder to link to the original source.

I also suspect that media sites such as Reddit and 9gag, which are anonymous, are much bigger breeding grounds for Qanon followers than Facebook is. But I guess its the thought that counts? Still, I wouldnt really call this a victory until Reddit and 9gag does the same, and 4chan and its siblings are closed.

It marginalizes them from the mainstream and limits their spread. Vulnerable people have gotten sucked into Qanon since it is so widespread and normalized on Facebook. These people have never even heard of fringe sites like 4chan.

It's similar to a virus, the further marginalized the virus the less it will spread through a population.

Or consider access to drugs. There are some drugs that people would probably try if they were more accessible. Yet to get them, people would have to get on the darkweb. Most people haven't even heard of the darkweb and wouldn't have the skills or patience to try to get setup. If these drugs were easily accessible with a click of a button on Amazon, usage would dramatically increase.

@Forestluv

On a second look, it seems like decent action has been taken against Qanon not only by Facebook, but also by Twitter and Reddit just this year. The users have reportedly migrated to other channels, like Discord, but those channels definitely dont give you the platform Twitter or Reddit does.

The social media giants are definitely waking up.

@Hansu And as you said, driving them underground creates new challenges - such as tracking them down.

Yeah, I think discord is doing something about it too, at least they mentioned they will.

Its a bit more difficult there.
Because each separate server can have its own guidelines and can be locked. Each serving like a small sealed invisible forum.

I have a friend that is on the far right and after the purge YouTube did a year ago they all went on Discord servers. Videos are flowing, books are being shared....ect. Everything is the same, just the anger is greater.

There is an even bigger problem there, the servers are locked and hard to find and mark, they are hermetically sealed echo chambers radicalizing people even more. Its a tough ball game man .....

Support the ban, the internet is the née public square, and if companies like Facebook and Reddit Twitter have such a huge user base and allow shit like this to exist they need to be regulated, I think the fcc chair is a lot to blame for this, if we had a competent fcc chair there would already be regulations and standards.

Facebook already has a huge compliance department but they certainly need more regulations like anything that is getting too out of control, it’s always a balance

That he supports the censorship of political opinions different from his.

Speaking of which, federal regulation in the current political climate would consist of banning the failing NY Times and CNN. You know, the enemies of the people.

That said, I think ISIS got banned from social media years ago so this is not unprecedented. It's kind of weird banning terrorist organisations that are themselves a product of Facebook's own algorithms, but no doubt the company is trying to strike a balance between limiting the severity of violence it causes, whilst maximising revenue.

@Yog

Yep. Discord servers are safe haven for radical groups.

Luckily it seems that the developers have decryption keys to discord messages, so its not an absolute vacuum of authority

There should be a federal agency which sets ToS standards across all social media sites, with clear guidelines for bannable speech and an appeals court process.

For example, it should be against ToS to accuse people of being pedophiles without tangible evidence. As this is slander/libel.

Speech inciting violence or hatred or racial conspiracies such as "Jews controlling the world" should also be bannable.

Of course there will be many grey areas and devils will try to exploit and skirt the guidelines no matter what. It's a classic problem of how to police bad actors. But we already know how to do this: police department and courts.

We basically need an online police department and online courts for online crimes.

You cannot compare 4chan and Reddit with Facebook. Facebook is far more mainstream and potentially damaging. 4chan is a niche site for toxic trolls and agnsty teenage anime fans. It's not mainstream at all.

Reddit is also pretty niche compared to Facebook, but even Reddit has standards. They will ban QAnnon at some point if they haven't already.

Banning from Facebook, YT, Twitter, and Apple is hugely important. If you're not on those platforms, you're basically a nobody. The Alex Jones ban was very effective at stopping his garbage from spreading.

There will always be toxic niche sites. What's important is the mainstream sites are safeguarded from viral garbage.

Censoring the other political side is just like repressing your own shadow, will only make it fester and grow bigger.

Indeed the most extreme stuff shouldnt be on places like facebook. But in general it should be faced head on and debated. The cancel/censoring tactic the left is pushing now is countraproductive.

Let's give QAnnon a kiss. Maybe that'll cure 'em.
