9/11, 25 Years Later

It's now 9/11/2026 here in Bali, 25 years ago the attacks happened that changed the US and the world forever. I decided to revisit some old footage, interviews, documentaries... and I still can't wrap my head around it. Like something about it just doesn't register, like I don't get it. Not in some moral way, more like the event itself was so other-worldly, chaotic, and insane that it still just doesn't make sense to me. It's a feeling that's hard to explain. I was like 6 when it happened and still remember seeing it on TV but had on clue what I was looking at. 

 

Anyway, may the world find peace.

I’m not one of them but expect it.

Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend the evil and cruelty in this world. This event is one of millions that happened so far.

I had a therapist in 2013 who believed that 9/11 was a hoax. Crazy nut. He was fired soon after. Goodbye!

I saw it on tv too. I was 10 and in 5th grade. I was at school and I remember the tv showing the news live. I remember seeing one or both of the towers fall. I don’t remember if we were there to see the second plane hit, I think the tv went on in my social studies classroom after both hit. I do remember watching one or both of the towers fall live. I believe the principal then told the teachers to turn the tv off as it was too disturbing. The teachers were all shook, the librarian too. I don’t remember the lessons from the rest of the day, the teachers all seemed worried. I was in the school library later that day and even saw my dad’s car. He came to the school to check on us but he didn’t take us out early. He picked us up and we talked about it and we watched W give his speech that night.

The official conspiracy theory about a islamist terrorist cell punctuating US air defences and causing thousands of Americans to die in New York and Washington DC, involving dozens of fringe anomalies, is hard to believe.

@Ulax Because it is too damn complex. It might take 60 years till a accurate explanation can be drawn, like they try to do now with UAPs and human-alien contact.

Anyways it is not that important. Stronger democratization and government transparency is.

@BlessedLion I was two when I happened. Mom told me I would be in my crib crying "they're gonna bomb us" when the news talked about terrorism.

When I look at 9/11 as an adult, I look and think it makes perfect sense. The attackers believed that America was an economic parasite which destroyed their land in the middle east. They have this"death to America" ideology because historically America has economically and militarily suppressed the autonomy of other regions. Terrorism is the result of radicals who identify super powers as responsible for their miserable circumstances. They respond by knowing they can't win in head to head combat and therefore resulting to shocking tactics that serve as tools to terrorize and therefore shake confidence in a super power. The outcome is that following the retaliation in the invasion of Iraq, the world increasingly lost faith in America. The target wasn't the buildings themselves, but what they symbolized to the world with America as an economic superpower.

Meanwhile the religious ideology is largely propaganda. Many of the terrorists don't have a deep understanding of Islam. It is similar to states who use Christianity to justify brutality. It looks more like propaganda and PR work so the violence feels righteous and necessary. This is essentially the point of Islam and Christianity in this case while the underlying conflicts are the result of economic disruptions in the middle east due to the interventions of global super powers like the US.

Of course I'm not saying the attacks were justified and that this should have happened. I'm saying that this is completely understandable and comprehensible given a study of how terrorists think and act knowing they can't win in direct confrontation. This would be the available option to them which avoids direct war while causing massive damage.

I have done a lot of research in perpetrator psychology, so I can understand this while still maintaining that they need to be stopped. They are still killing innocent people and the attacks themselves do not actually fix the economic problems underneath these conflicts. In fact it makes the economic suffering in the middle east even worse by provoking prolonged interventions. Therefore, they shouldn't have blown up the twin towers, but I can understand why they did it.
