Squaring Ugliness With Beauty

By Leo Gura - March 3, 2026

People have been asking me how come I speak about ugliness now when before I said Reality is Beauty?

The distinction between ugly/beautiful is relative. This is a duality. In this case both ugly and beauty are relative. But when I speak of Beauty with a capital B, that’s different. That’s Beauty as an absolute. There is a difference between beauty and Beauty. Beauty as an absolute is how Reality looks from God’s POV, from a completely selfless POV. Everything is Beautiful from God’s POV, include all the “ugly” stuff like war, violence, theft, slavery, etc. But from the human POV, war, violence, theft, slavery, etc are relatively ugly. You can see this specifically with war. War is heinous and ugly, however, you can simultaneously see that there is a higher beauty to war. War is beautiful in a melancholy, tragic way. Relative ugliness, when fully integrated, actually deepens Beauty. Reality is made more Beautiful when ugly things like war, violence, and hatred are part of it. It is a more mature kind of Beauty. A meta-Beauty. It is Beautiful that horror is part of Reality. That’s what makes Reality so “real”. Reality is not just a saccharine Disneyland, it is a deeply tragic thing, full of real dangers and suffering and heinous things that will make your skin crawl. That’s what makes life so “real”. The stakes are “real” from the human POV. This helps sell the illusion and makes life so compelling and meaningful. Life is meaningful because there are serious stakes in the form of suffering and horror. Otherwise life would be as meaningful as a casual video game. If you took all the horror out of life, life would not be as rich, it would be flat and dull. Life has heavy, heavy stakes. That makes life Beautiful in a painful way for humans.

The more heinous shit there is, the harder it is to accept/love Reality. This raises the bar for what love is. But on the other hand, if you are able to love all of it, then your love becomes that much greater — super-human. The bar for loving reality is so insanely high that the only one who can do it is a completely selfless infinite mind: God! Reality is too horrific for a finite being to love it. That’s not a bug, that’s a feature. That’s a measure of the super-human capacity of God’s Love. God is insane Love. A Love that boggles the human mind. Insane, mind-boggling Love is the highest Beauty. The highest Beauty incorporates ugliness within itself.

So, it is not a contradiction to say that war is both ugly and Beautiful. Of course it’s both.
