I'm still not fully accepting this "hard work" and effort thing

31 posts in this topic

Because like, a lot of teachers talk of the possibility of making an abundant living doing something that one is passionate about and that comes EASY... Others are adamant about the hard work and effort mentality. So, what is it?

Do I really have to swallow the reality that it's gonna be harsh and effortful? It feels like hard work is forced, I don't know..

@blankisomeone It's a balance. You have to work hard on your passions. Passions aren't just effortless and easy, they require a bit of hard work. Other than that yeah you shouldn't probably work hard on something you hate, this will be way too hard and ultimately unfulfilling.

Think this way: you're insulting the human race by not taking hard work seriously.

Maybe it is not one or the other.

On one hand, Michael Jordan did not become so good by slacking off, he outworked everyone around him. But at the same time, He probably enjoyed it often, and was passionate about it.

the hard part is working hard enough at something for it to become enjoyable, its a byproduct of mastery (methinks)

Lazy would be "I don't care about improving my life". Since you want to improve, you're not lazy. You're dealing with a structural problem.

  • What is so hard about working hard?
  • Are other things using up all your energy?
  • Are you stuck in indecision?
  • Do you fear committing to a specific path due to uncertainty or FOMO?
  • Are you too distracted with other things you feel compelled to do?

There's a reason or reasons for your resistance. All you have to do is find out what they are, then restructure.

Restructuring takes time.

You will have to endure an acclimation phase.

Accept that, given your current structure, motivation and willpower will only come AFTER you gain momentum, not before. But they will come, so long as you restructure.

There is no mind trick to solve your problem. No special alignment trick.

You gotta remove the blockers.

Haha, yes.

But also rewarding. If it was easy it wouldn't mean anything.

Climbing mount Everest means nothing if you can just helicopter to the top.

I said it before is it hard to walk 70 miles? Is it hard to take a step? You are taking the load of the whole thing all at once. Its not hard to take a step.

You are thinking you have to walk the 70 miles in one day. You can just take 1 step a day.

Leo has you thinking you need to walk as long and as hard every single day. He will be done first but you will still be enjoying the journey. If you go slow up mount Everest you might see a mountain Goat that the person who went fast missed. You might see a abominable snowman or a yeti that Leo didnt see. You might have dinner with it and it would be a good experience that he didnt have cause he rushed to the top.

Its not about reaching the top its about you experiencing things.

Every single person who reaches the top says now what?

They reach the top and end up in the same spot you are right now.

I mean we don't know anything about your situation.

You just need to avoid too many distractions ("dopamine detox") so that you're more drawn to doing things; and find things you particularly enjoy; things that fit into a vision. Maintain good mental hygiene to prevent your attention from being directed toward negative beliefs rather than a vision, a project.

True, this is a common blocker. But some can't muster the energy to figure out if or why they should walk the 70 miles. They don't know that the 70 miles is even the right thing to do. They have other blockers.

Energy levels is a big one. OP mentioned sleep problems in another thread. Running on fumes makes everything much more difficult.

@Leo GuraIts hard for this person to even start. Difficulty is relative.

If Gandalf started the journey by telling Frodo that he has to fight Balrog and Giant spiders and hordes of Orcs he wouldnt have started his journey. It can and will be hard but he dosent have to think about that right now he just has to focus on leaving the shire.

What else are you going to do with your time but use it?

It might be interesting to ask yourself; would you rather waste time in bed, scrolling etc? Or waste time at some sort of goal? At least the time spend MIGHT lead to something.

The thing I worry about with your mindset is; you are going to face hard shit no matter what. Be it work, health (physical or mental), wealth, people sick or dying around you. Disability... I might be assuming, but you sound young and unchallenged.

Life is going to come for you. Quickly. And if you don't take it by the balls with work and applying yourself it's going to crush those nuts, making your feel like a victim. Like you are a ball stuck in the pinball machine getting fucked up by the paddles, without realising you are the paddles.

I think the most important takeaway from your OP is that working at a passion doesn't feel like work. It is about perception. Toiling at something we hate stretches time out into agony. Injecting yourself full force into passion feels like no effort at all. This is what it is like for me when I am painting; time stops. But my GOD is there a lot of work and effort involved in art. It is just, I do not perceive it that way. Not like how I perceive my construction job to be work, regardless of how much I have mastered it.

This points to something powerful; it is not the actual hard work issue - it is a perception issue.

It is how you are feeling about it. Not the thing itself. How we feel about things changes all the time. I mean - thank fuck right? We want feelings, perceptions and emotions to be transient states.

When I think on the last few threads you have created around this topic - I go back to the thought 'this user hasn't found their passion yet, their drive. Their reason to wake up'
