It can be helpful to determine what kind of player you are:  Do you like quiet game vs. aggressive game?  Do you like classical vs. rapid or bullet?  Are you an openings or endgame nerd, or a tactical player?  Are you a master at positional play or are you more of a romantic spur of the moment player?  Chess has multiple modes of play -- and oftentimes you're tacitly agreeing with your opponent as to what specific game of chess will be played.

@Joshe Absolutely. I've seen this cope so many times. There are fictional stories warning about becoming this type of person. The genius that has the whole world figured out and is "above" most things in society, yet is a man child playing video games in their parents basement -- because it's easier to create castles in your head than accept the reality of mediocrity.
