My therapists thinks I’m a little out there

15 posts in this topic

I told her I fell in love with a girl and I told her that I actually found a part of myself in her. In other words I project my love onto her. After hearing that she told me I was a “little out there”. I have a good click with this therapist but she is not spiritual so she doesn’t understand where I come from. Do you think I should change my therapist? Often I have to censor myself because I’m afraid she won’t understand me. Trying to find a spiritual therapist is very difficult. I have already had 7-8 therapist and none were spiritual. Psychology and spirituality are close fields but it seems there aren’t many therapists that are into spirituality. :/

How is it difficult? Yelp is swimming in them.

If you take spirituality too seriously, a mainstream therapist is going to diagnose you with something and medicate you to 'bring you back to physical reality'.

Completion-process practitioners are way better. They're actually trained in inner-child work.

That's too little information for me to give you a good advice wether or not you should change therpists.. I'm actually not even sure what she really means by that phrase "to be out there"...

in general you should feel comfortable enough to be open with a therapist. From my own experience with this insecurity in front of therapists I can tell you that a professional does not judge you (thats what they told me when I confronted them with my issues of opening up). Maybe you are just overthinking this. Try and be honest about some stuff you held back before and see how she reacts. If she is professional you will be surprised how chill she will be.. If she is judgy in any way, maybe it's really best to keep looking.

I'm not sure how realistic it is to find a therapist who is also into spirituality.. They have a scientific background of course.

It would raise my alarms too if I had a therapist who said something like that, but she may just be concerned about you getting into trouble because sometimes people get so attached to spiritual beliefs that they can't function well in society and that has negative consequences on mental health.

Since you say you generally click well, I think before deciding to find another therapist it could actually be a good opportunity to be honest about your feelings and tell her that you don't feel completely comfortable to open up because of these kinds of remarks. If she gets defensive or something worse then definitely look for another therapist. A good therapist would take this seriously and it could actually lead to you becoming less afraid to show your true self.

@StarStruck What country are you in? (might not matter). I can recommend at least one who also has psychedelic experience.

@StarStruck  https://www.prionline.nl/therapeuten/

I believe this is what you're looking for.

PRI is a therapy form grounded in past re-experiencing, which, as I've explained in videos and posts is the only thing that can truly be curative.

The methodology is somewhat watered-down, with a spiritual touch which I find somewhat unnecessary, but it's in all probability way better than the talk therapy BS you'd normally be fed.

@StarStruck What type of therapist is your current therapist? i.e. psychodynamic, humanistic etc.

Maybe in the majority of cases. The first clinical psychologist I ever met to knew about spiritual enlightenment. My university has a class called "spirituality, religion and existential questions", and we had a lecture that touched on the differences between extraordinary experiences, mystical experiences and psychosis. The most important distinction is that psychosis is generally dysfunctional, while extraordinary/mystical experiences generally aren't (in fact, they're often associated with higher functioning).

Most therapists don't know much. They spent the whole life inside a consultation room/clinic hearing stories from their patients and giving advices from books.

Literally, being a therapist is their first and last real job.

They are wrapped up in their small world unless they find many ways to break out of their small world.

And she has the audacity to blame me for being mechanical and too technical all the while she can't do shit without her procedures and rule books. It is projection at best. A good therapist doesn't project and for that to be the case she has to be spiritual.  This work is just way above her head which is sad because it is the blind leading the blind. At least I have the resources to save myself while others don't have that luxury.
