Bill Maher: The left come across lacking common sense

22 posts in this topic

As someone who is a moderate this 8 minute clip describes why so many americans don't embrace the democrats.

https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2020/11/13/maher-democrats-too-often-come-across-as-lacking-common-sense/

"Republicans are the party of don’t wear masks, kids in cages, ‘Lock her up.’ And Democrats are the party of every hypersensitive social justice warrior woke bullshit story in the news. They’re the party that disappears people or tries to make them apologize for ridiculous things.”

Maher further stated, “Democrats kept saying in the campaign, you can’t possibly think Trump is preferable to what we’re selling, and many voters keep saying, yes we can. In fact, our primary reason [for] voting for him is to create a bulwark against you. Because your side thinks silence is violence, and looting is not. Because you’re the party of chasing speakers off college campuses and making everyone walk on eggshells and replacing let’s not see color with let’s see it always and everywhere, formerly the position of the Ku Klux Klan. It would be so easy to win elections if we would just drop this shit.”

Yes, I posted the video link yesterday in another thread. Bill Maher is in a tiny minority of left-leaners who isn't afraid to question the actual reason for losing so often. I watch his videos religiously because they actually expand my mind, rather than repeating the same brain-dead leftist narrative.

I remember how much of the 2016 presidential debates were fixated on nonsense like transgender bathroom rights. Is this really the sort of issue that the average, underpaid, unsupported American is concerned with? Now it's defunding the police and defending looting. Democrats could hardly be more out of touch if they tried.

Get rid of the garbage identity politics and you'd have a party so strong that the Republican party would go extinct, and the Democratic party would need to be split into two to avoid a monopoly.

@sholomar Why are you linking to Breitbart here? That is like the most garbage political source.

I hope you don't actually consume content from them on a regular basis.

It is a substandard source, so here is the video from Maher's channel.

Breitbart is political enema.

(you know at one point in 2016, I wrote in my diary - Milo Yiannopoulos is my hero. That's how much brain washing Breitbart can do. Today I feel ashamed of that diary entry.

I used to tell people in 2016 that they should vote for Trump. I even donated a dollar to his campaign back in 2016.

And look today, I made a 180 degree flip, I learned so much from not watching these brainwashing media anymore..

It's so easy to get sucked into all this.

Now there was this guy on YouTube {I'm not going to say his name, but he used to brainwash me so bad}).

The Bill Maher clip is classic ORANGE/Green thinking GREEN has gone too far. From a Green/YELLOW perspective, I tend to resonate with Maher's overall point, yet I also see his arguments tainted by judgement and condescension as being likely counter-productive to his goal. Will be interesting to see how it all plays in context of the Democratic Party. At some point it will probably be overthrown by GREEN like Trump did with Republican Party. Bernie came close but the country wasn't ready yet. I only hope that when this does happen it will be by a Bernie-like character who has broader appeal beyond GREEN and not a social justice warrior type of who will be highly polarizing and push the country to the extremes in ways that backfire.

Sometimes Green does go too far. But in many ways Orange does not go far enough.

Green likes to go too far on social and cultural issues. Orange likes to not go far enough on economic issues.

Don't forget, Bill Maher is a Boomer. You can't expect too much from him. He's not gonna be a foaming at the mouth socialist. For a Boomer he's doing all right.

@Leo Gura What's an example of what you mean by this?

Agree. Maher represents the common sense no bullshit wing of the left which is always refreshing and much needed, IMO.

All of neoliberalism and the economic platform of the corporate capitalist DNC.

Capitalism needs serious reforms and structural changes, not just tinkering around edges as Biden plans to do.

We don't necessarily have to go full-socialist, but capitalism needs serious systemic reforms. Right now Neolibs are in denial about the structural problems of capitalism. They pretend as though no structural problems exist. This is a stage Orange disaster.

@sholomar I get you. I don't like extreme social justice warriors either. A minority of people are far too spotlighted on social media. Sometimes politics makes me question what spiral dynamics is when I see these fools. I hope it's a minority of young people, you can't measure numbers online.

With group think and authoritarianism, they use the magical powers of the tribe to silence individuals.  I used to be very affable to them. I support the general direction they're trying to take things, since there's still prejudice and barriers for minorities in society to address, but they aren't folks who I like to be chummy with.

I know I'm weak and I'm projecting. But every-time I see these people, all I see are weak and lame betas. Not too much better than the other side, although they push my buttons more than the other side. Because at least the other side is more straightforward to deal with.

Hark ye yet again — the little lower layer. All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event — in the living act, the undoubted deed — there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there's naught beyond. But 'tis enough.

Common sense is problematic.

By which I mean that the average person on the street has all sorts of implicit biases that are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, jingoistic, etc. If the Left's goal were merely to win a bunch of elections then it would probably be more successful in that by coaxing the ego of the average person on the street and by refraining from challenging that person's toxic attitudes. But that's not the only goal of the Left; the Left also wants to shift the culture away from such toxic attitudes in the very first place. So there's a balancing act here between

(a) gaining enough political power to meaningfully dismantle the systems of oppression that guide American society while
(b) maintaining the moral clarity and witness necessary to challenge such cultural and political systems in the first place.

The Left is still in the process of striking the correct balance in pursuing these two goals, but to pretend that the only goal here is (a) is to misunderstand the nature of the contemporary Left.
