People with activated Yellow, what do you do for a living?

@Azote Knowing you're meant to be a superhero is very different from going out there in the world and saving people from disaster. Engineering research is much safer, you've got plenty of time to daydream about fame and significance to distract yourself from the fact that you hate that fucking research.

 

Discovering your path is about what really makes you feel right, not what seems to be some fancy activity according to some clever book recommended by some fancy bald dude from YouTube. Some lessons can't be learned by mind.

I like my job, it gives me enough of physical activity, I like my colleagues and I have never really felt need for building something just to earn more money , I have considered it on purpose of making world better place for everyone, but even that did not feel like right thing for me.

Hi , how do you balance work with self-actualization. I feel like im caught in the beginning of a very time and energy consuming career (doctor) and so far as a medical student, i really have trouble putting self-actualization on the top of my priority even though deep down i think it is what I want. i just posted a question regarding it  which explains my situation. i find it interesting to ask you because to me, a teacher is a quite demanding job.

@Privet Very elegant and on point. Do you think seeking after to big of a variety of interests (therefore not specialising) is a trap of stage yellow? I sometime notice myself wanting to start every new thing I come across

This avatar is green with smudges of yellow. Not yet fully yellow, I don't think.

But to answer your question, I write for a living. I was a writer when I was in Orange (actually before that as well, since childhood) and I remained a writer as I went into Green and started integrating aspects of Yellow.

However, the specific kinds of projects that I work on are completely different now. Many projects that I worked on in Orange or clients that I would have taken on would be unthinkable to me now. At the same time, projects that I dismissed as frivolous or risky in Orange are now things that I spend a lot of my time on.

These days, projects also tend to choose me rather than the other way around. It's my job to surrender to them when they show up.

I also make more money now, oddly enough. Green is not just hippieland. There are benefits to it on a practical level, too. Namely, people who are in Green and Yellow aren't that common yet, but usually they will strongly prefer to hire / work with / buy the products of other people who are Green and Yellow. For this, they are willing to pay more.

One of the most important things for me though was that raising consciousness increased flexibility. For work, it matters less what you specifically do, and more why you are doing it.

I don't think so. Most likely it's just discipline issues and poor goal setting. Or some other underlying psychological/physiological stuff like perfectionism, procrastination, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of change, fear of uncertainty, addiction to thrill of exploration of new things, ADD, impulsiveness, indecisiveness, energy problems, depression or something like that.

You gotta give it a good shot and go deeper to understand if you really like this new thing. If it sucks you up - congratulations.

@Azote Alex Gray is a technical master and also a spiral wizard.

Becoming a master in a technical skill and a leader at the same time is not at odds with each other. You can do both.

I'm on my path to mastering music, but I'm also working on a project/business that is gonna guide musicians to create more conscious music that elevates human culture.

I'm also gonna educate and help musicians grow as people because I often see that they have severe imbalances in their life from doing the all-in approach on their craft, and thus neglecting business, health, emotional mastery, people skills, mindfulness etc.

To be honest, now that I am tenured the demands for productivity and promotion have decreased. My job is somewhat chill and I even taught a course on self-actualization this semester.

More demanding stages of my life were as an undergraduate, graduate student, post-doc and tenure-track prof (my life from 22y.o. to 43y.o.). 

I went in and out of self-actualization work. Meditation helped reduce stress and helped me focus - so it helped in practical life. As well, my social groups involved self-actualization - so that helped me stay involved. During intense times at work, I would drift away - yet, there was always a call to return.

As well, I decided as a graduate student that I did not want a high pressure and time demanding job. I turned down several offers that would have paid much more and given more influence, prestige and recognition - yet I didn't want to spend 60+ work weeks year round. There were other things I wanted to do in life and never got sucked into seeking that type of stuff. As a graduate student, I realized I wanted a job where I could have at least three months off a year to pursue other interests. I was willing to sacrifice a lot of income potential, social status and personal prestige for that time off. 

In academia, I am like the "6th man" in basketball - the player that comes off the bench to provide a "spark" to the team. I'm happy with that role as it allows me to do a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff in life I love to do and find meaningful.

@Azote It seems that academia is the place to be for Yellow. Take a look at all the people Leo listed in his Yellow video: Thomas Khun, Donella Meadows, Douglas Hofstadter, Alfred Korzybski, Abraham Maslow... All of them do or did work in academia.

That being said, we desperately need Yellow in all areas of life, like politics, etc. If you can make it as a Yellow politician, congrats. I'll vote for you!
