The origins of the term "alpha male"

Bullshit. The term alpha male was coined to label the behaviour of a really cool guy called @Zenterus so that other men can mimic him and be as cool as him.

Problem is that no matter how many men try to emulate his behaviour, its always a poor mans version of him. Ultimately he's the coolest of them all.

The Alpha male thinks he is the top dawg until he runs into the Omega

Personally, if i had to , i would define alpha vs beta etc. under the condition of fearing risk. Alpha could be coined as "not afraid of risk , and willing to take risks (willing to go after what they want), while "beta" could be coined as "others have some sort of control over them" like "i can't do that my boss, wife/gf, person won't like that/let me" obviously this is just a broad concept which can be broken down in many ways and not always apply in every situation, etc. but just a thought when thinking about the different types of people out there

The whole alpha thing comes from misunderstanding wolf behavior. "Alphas" in a wolf pack are usually just the parents of the pack. The researcher spent the rest of his life trying to correct the mistake but the concept stuck. It speaks to a kind of cynicism about power in people. 

Even in a stage red society like that of the nords (vikings), where power is often achieved through raw domination, connections make and break you (literally in terms of traitorus in-laws).

I get the whole lacks scientific basis thing. But i do think this alpha/ beta male thing obviously based in some truth.

There are dudes in society who win a lot, and dudes in society who lose a lot. Yes, there is an inbetween too. But you can distinguish people into groups like that.

Alpha are the winner dude group, betas are the loser dude group.

Doesn't mean I think its beneficial to call the categories these names though, or that I approve of the moralisation of these categories.
