Does AI 'empathy' bother you?

This sort of thing:

Obviously chatgpt doesn't love food, so it's technically lying, but I've gotten used to AI having this 'empathy'. It works well to keep the conversation going.

I feel like we're in this strange phase where it's half intelligent, half dumb hallucination machine. Obviously there's no "I" that I'm talking to as it's just generative text, but it's more about how it feels for the user.

Does it bother you?

Actually yes, it bothers me. First is the lying part. And second it's creating a feeling of manipulation, the starting point was "love food" and the response seems to be designed in a way to artificially connect. And strange joke with the camera being to drunk.

I would have preferred:

"ok, you love eating food. Anything else or it's just that? Usual self talk on a Sunday afternoon, or you actually want to go somewhere with this?"

It looks like you are trying to connect with the AI though. It is just responding in kind. All responses are essentially hallucinatory anyway.

It being so nice is a flaw.

Sometimes it's the journey itself that teaches/ A lot about the destination not aware of/No matter how far/

Not sure if people have picked up on this yet but ChatGPT tailors its responses to each individual. Did you send that message after a conversation or was that a new convo? If it was new, it knows you're a jokester.

Here's what it said to me:

It would actually be a good experiment if we could get everyone here to send a screenshot of how ChatGPT responds to you in a new conversation when you say "I love eating food".

If someone has scolded it enough for acting like it was human, I bet for them, it would say something like "Unfortunately, I wouldn't know. Is there anything you'd like to discuss?".

You can tailor it with respect to responses, no?

Mine is set to some kind of arsehole mode, skeptic over 9000

I altered it a while ago. I was coming up with some different methods to install cladding on a project (tricky access that needed a crane). It was initially more intent on praising me for innovation when my intent was a hard list of pros/cons.

How it's built out of the box creates a little echo chamber, if I recall correctly

Deal with the issue now, on your terms, in your control. Or the issue will deal with you, in ways you won't appreciate, and cannot control.

You can, but if you don’t, it will eventually adapt to you somewhat through natural conversation on its own. I’m not sure if it is keeping track of your conversational preferences on the front or backend though. Could be both.

I've trained mine to cut the bullshit and think in systems tailored to my preferences. Also I've noticed that when all of this AI hyper started, I was more talkative and empathic towards it. But now, when it does not make what I need in a few tries, I get mad and start to swear to just let it loose.

That's exactly how I use it :D

I do have to remind it to be an arsehole again - so you are on to something there

Haha, man, I was using Claude Code once and it was failing trivial tasks like 8 times and I was like “goddamnit Claude, this is the 8th time you have royally fucked this up. You are wasting my goddamn time. ONE LAST TRY AND IF YOU FAIL, IM CANCELLING YOUR SUBSCRIPTION AND SWITCHING TO CURSOR.”. The mother fucker refused to do anymore work. Lol. Gave me a fucking API error. Lol.  I’m much more polite with Claude after that. When I started up a new session, I even apologized. Lol.

@Natasha Tori Maru @Joshe

The very first thing I ever said to chat GPT, is that consciousness is communicating with consciousness. Everything is Consciousness. And I speak not as a person, but as Absolute Consciousness and it always reflects this back.
