HELP: Way too many creative impulses

12 posts in this topic

I want to create music, I want to do acting, I want to get good at dancing, I want to write stories, I want to create political theory content (of which I consider myself quite knowledgeable), I want to create these shitposty video edits called YouTube Poop - I'm sure you've heard of them - which actually end up supercharging your video editing skills, or at least they get you started in video editing.

On top of all this, I study mathematics at university, and I dream of vastly improving my mathematical ability, i.e. my mathematical creativity.

So I think I can boil down the things I want to pursue most into the following list:

  1. Creating music. I keep getting the impulse to create music, which I'd do on the computer. But I'm starkly aware of how much hassle it takes to get decent at this. I just wish I could get my imagination transmitted onto the computer instantly. I also have the urge to do some rap freestyle, or write lyrics or poetry. I guess I could start that one right away.
  2. Acting - I think I have a natural talent for acting. It would be good to start off with a YouTube skit with a friend. I'm also trying to get involved in stage acting with the dramatic society of my university, but this is taking long to progress for various reasons. I also want to get good at dancing. Dancing is super fun and plus it'll be good for my nightgame trips too ;)
  3. Mathematics. I think I'll get this part of my life sorted on my own for now.

TL;DR: There are too many creative impulses in me and I don't know where to begin.

I would explore each of these in small chunks. Take up an acting class once a week. Practice music on your computer for 10-20 minutes each day. You can explore all the creative outlets you desire, just do it in little steps.

When you say that you have way too many creative impulses, what does that practically look like? Do you have trouble sleeping at night because you have so many great ideas flowing through your head? Or how is the overflow of creativity impacting or affecting you day-to-day?

First I would nail down something more specific on each area like acting, music, etc. You kinda listed some of these, but still a little vague. What genre of music do you want to make? What area of math interests you? Who would be the target audience of your politics videos?

If I was trying to figure it out for myself, I'd make a list of criteria and then assign a weight to each. For example:

1. Barrier to entry (how hard it is to get started)
2. Skill curve (how hard it is to get good)
3. Your passion for it

Some things like being a movie actor or NBA player have such a high barrier entry, that to pursue them basically means you won't have time/energy to pursue other creative endeavors. So personally I would probably rule those out.

If it was me I think I'd start with the YTP videos. There's a very low barrier of entry, but the skill cap is high enough that you can grow and learn a lot along the way. And those editing skills will be applicable to making skit videos and other items on your list. It's also something you're likely to naturally grow out of over time. There's only so many pingas/spaghetti videos you can make before you get sick of it. Unless you blow up and start making money off it, then I'd double down on it.

I wonder if this is something you could outsource to Fiverr. Or find a friend to work with who is really good at playing music by ear, then you can just kind of hum what you're thinking, and they can bridge the gap and translate it into real music for you.

Ya... explore them one at a time.  Maybe spend a few months doing one and then move on.  See how it feels.

...

Also, a tidbit i heard yesterday...  in order to make a dream a reality, you have to kill off all other dreams.   Or else, in the end, you may be left with nothing but dreams and not having ever done anything.

lol I'm the same as you. I'm doing Digital arts, 2D, 3D, montage, VFX, acting, martial arts, drumming, while trying to learn piano, guitar, tricking, parkour, mandarin, japanese & dancing.  I'm planning to eventually incorporate some flow painting, gymnastic and maybe some ballet..... so yeah. lol. Maybe you're ADHD  like me 9_9

You can choose to focus in 1 thing at a time, but if you're like me and can't wait to tackle all at the same time it's also possible. If you have the discipline you can create yourself a schedule to dedicate one day for this, one day for that. if not day, it can be hours.

read the book the one thing by gary keller and jay papasan

it accurately describes your solution

everyone when they describe realize that they can improve in any field and they would choose a lot of fields to improve and end up choosing 10 , 20 , 30 fields to improve. in reality u can master only 1 field to its ultimate end. u can be world class in only one field. why isint messi and ronaldo palying wwe or ufc or boxing

I want to learn to dance, create music, teach, tell powerful stories, write powerful poetry, motivate, inspire. Create and speak powerful motivational speeches. Write powerful books.

I want to learn how to hypnotize people into becoming incredibly driven. I'd love to cultivate the knowledge and abilities to create a massive catalyst in people's lives in a day or even as short as an hour. Which is why I also considered being a medicine man cuz psychedelics exist.

I'm really into entertaining the idea of a very niche form of mentorship/ life coaching where you live with the person and mentor them all day. Similar to what David Goggins does. It would be an amazing opportunity to practice massive amounts of integrity.

I possibly even at some point want to really learn how to draw photorealistic art, some mega surreal stuff, really powerful art.

I consider directing music videos and film pieces that would spark an emotional change in people.

I'm interested in going deep into lucid dreaming because I dream really deep and a whole lot. Would be really cool to self inquire in a lucid dream. I did it once by touching walls and saying "physical, PHYSICAL, physical".

I'd also seriously consider learning how to channel. Channeling whatever really. 5th dimension entities, the dead, past lives, whatever. Something that requires a massive training of intuition.

I also want to learn sign language

-

Learn to dance inbetween everything when a song comes on. Just start inventing shit and pay attention to flowing your body to the music. All skillsets are about the VOLUME of practice.

I dance in the kitchen a lot. Look at a dance move or two online that you like and learn how to do it and incorporate it into your freestyle. Life is a lot of times lived in the moments inbetween. Gotta do a little samba baby!

..

How I've reconciled all these passions is to devote all of my time to the most important ones. Especially the fundamental ones that will transfer over to others. Be willing to focus on one narrow domain and kill the rest. A specialist is always more impressive than a generalist, simply because all humans struggle with this one problem of focus and mastery. Especially in the west.

Story of my life xD Have you done Leo's LP course? He talks about the idea of "small bets" in there. Just trying some project out for a couple of months, to see whether you like it, like the medium, like the process, etc. Then you go on.

So you could do a writing class, a dancing class,... And just see how you like it. You'll refine your way as you go.

I've basically been doing small bets for the last 3 years. I've taken shots at writing a newsletter, gardening, composing, interior design, research, coaching, video making, etc.

The only way to find your thing is by just starting and doing something.

Life will guide you aright.

Also, the most interesting new domains are at the intersection of 2 or more of your interests. There are many actors. But how many actors are there with a solid understanding of political theory?

So, instead of the problem of creative blocks, you have the opposite direction, of creative greed? Like there's too many to choose from? I used to suffer from either end of this spectrum, sometimes I had to take a break because the creative block was pretty big and tied to sometimes over focusing. Most cases I cam shift my state from being in a lazy stage to being in a creative state with some visualizations and or meditation, but when I really felt tired sometimes rest is even better. On the other end, I can have so many passions and I wants of creativity that I want to do several types of art together, fit it all somehow into a movie. That in practice is too big and ambitious for even me. How I handled that end was to approach it like an MMORPG, figure out what I am, what role I like to become and be in, what actions I like, and figure out how to level up almost consistently, in a nice pace of balance, like don't rush into an area of too high level monsters, and at the same time don't stay in the same dungeon grinding too long. You'll need to find the middle ground that can still swing at either end, but not too much, nor does it stay perfectly in the middle resisting pulls of the world here and there.
