What do you think about Jordan Peterson’s political views?

75 posts in this topic

I’m new to the “Jordan Peterson Phenomenon.” I know he blew up in popularity 3-4 years ago but I just recently (4 months ago) got interested in him. I enjoyed reading his book “12 rules for life.” I enjoyed his youtube lectures, discussions, debates, and interviews. The only thing that bothers me about Jordan Peterson is his political views towards communism. I enjoyed his debate with Slavaj Zizek. I’m not a communist. But I feel like Jordan is spreading fear about socialism. I don’t fear socialism. I feel socialism is the only way to balance out capitalism. Jordan acts like socialism is the first step towards totalitarian communist dictatorship. I just don’t see why he is afraid that socialism will turn into tyranny. What are your thoughts? Am I naive? Why do I have so much faith in our government to not become a dictatorship? The people wouldn’t allow it. Trump is a little scary tho. He breaks the laws openly in plain sight. But Trump is anti socialism.

All you need to know is that his idea of preparing for a debate about communism was to read the communist manifesto, a revolutionary propaganda piece written for peasants in the 1850s. His fear of socialism and the left is overblown. Social democrats won't take your freedoms away.

@Lindsay

i think many would benefit from the the 12 laws book, but at the end it's only one perspective and people use it to lock themselves down into their POV

@Carl-Richard

I consider him to be the “Shaman that failed.” I actually disagree with most of his politics, but I can “sense” he has some inner sense of shamanic insight that just never got fully developed. He clearly understands that power of myth and the subconscious to dictate human affairs, and I think it was by harnessing this energy that he managed to get so many listeners because he was appealing to something deeper inside of them.

The problem was his own quest for ego go in the way, alongside his paranoid fear of the collapse western civilisation and his inability to put his insights into greater context. He assumed that just because the subconscious mind is more powerful than modern society gives it credit for, then our only hope of survival is to make up bullshit faux-Christian narratives that suppress our inner beast. This is such a novice take on shamanism that it would be funny if he didn’t unfortunately use it to mislead so many of his followers down this road. Modern western civilisation isn’t going to collapse because of a few collage students wanting to be called by their preferred pronouns, if anything it’s the stuff he defends (neoliberalism, hyper-individualism, climate denial, etc) that is going to cause our future malaise.

Jordan’a biggest problem is Jordan Peterson. If he calmed the fuck down a little and got into yoga / psychedelics / meditation he could actually grow a lot as a human. The problem is he’s too full of himself to realistically do that that instead he’s just going to peddle his half-baked ideas until the day he dies.

I agree with most of your assessment. His biggest problem is that he is too conservative.

He is well read, highly inteligent and has deep understanding of human pshychology.

If he was little bit more liberal, he would be able to transcend himself.

Thank you all for commenting. It was interesting to read through your answers. I wish I knew how to quote people and respond. The process frustrates me. I feel old and left behind technology. I’m not even 30 yet.

@Lindsay  Under every single post, there's a couple of buttons that say "@ User", "Quote", and "Bookmark".

The "@ User" button puts the user's name at the front of your post, like how I've put your name in this post. It notifies the person you've mentioned them.

The "Quote" button puts their post in a quote box that you can reply to, like this:

^ This is me replying to your quote.

And finally the "Bookmark" button lets you bookmark someone's post so that you can easily find it to read later.

Hope this helps!

@Lindsay This person goes straight against the mainstream and dares to ask questions about this. Beautiful how he dares to take another perspective. You need to be very strong for it. Listen for example this interview where they try to hurt his character nearly every sentence , evey try is a lie and try for character assassination and he survives. People don't want you to know his arguments!

@andyjohnsonman  Its a long video i might look to it once. But the whole way the video works is not strong. He should be aloud to give counterpoints to the commenter. Now all the weaknesses of the commenter is not exposed. Thats to easy. My video the interviewer did get exposed in all different way on every try.

Hard thing to do with JP because he runs from debates.

@Opo  Jordan is known to be able to debate in the most extreme circumstances. The interview i just gave was a case in point. The mainstream media interviewer tried to put him away as a mean evil person nearly every sentence. And he remained completly in control. This man is from outer space.

He did a good job but it cost him alot. That is maybe why he is sick. His voice always breaks. He tries to drink the water then he stops. His laughter is artificial.

@Opo First watch the clip, or the extended version. nearly no other person gets so much scrutiny and still he debates on such a place. Or watch him around hostile left wing students because he thinks its not ok to put in law which language is alouid, were he just stays calm and explains himself. Not much people can do that.
