Late-Stage Capitalism At Its Finest (Fallout 1st Fiasco)

Yea.... its getting bizarre.

As someone working in the game industry I find it refreshing to see how small greenish teams are starting to pop up and manage to compete with this nonsense recently. I feel like this whole 3A idea recycling and micro transaction thing is probably going to crash in the next 5 years. So much indies have popped up with cool ideas. Some of even near 3A quality.

Subscription model is common among MMORPGs.

Competition is an antidote to greed.

It's because the game has already caused a controversy, and they're charging for a feature that everyone wanted to be included in the game

But a subscription model for a game is already stage orange greed

Competition will teach them lessons. They are not suddenly going to feel empathy for poor customers. Even if they did, they may still try to maximize survival through subscription model.

I mean feeling empathy for poor little rabbits didn't stop people from eating them. As long as you pay for their games, you will remain as a human cattle for consumption.

Vote with your money. Choose competitors. Money will talk.

So glad I exited the industry in 2008 when all this horse armor stuff began.

I had a phone interview with Todd for working on Fallout 3 but it didn't pan out.

horse armor seems to be that what people are searching for, when diamonds aka insights are not enough anymore ?

although the question is: did the games really get so much worse or did some people just grow expectations?

They did get worse.

I would rather play Fallout 2 than this bullshit and it's not a sentiment.

In 2006 Oblivion released a "horse armor" DLC for $2.50 that did nothing but give your horse some purely aesthetic armor (no gameplay effects) and the fans absolutely tore it to shreds. This was before price-gouging DLCs were common, so people at the time just laughed it off, but it would be telling about the direction the gaming industry was headed.

So, it is a horseshit in a sense.

Game companies have gotten a lot greedier and more exploitative in the last ten years. Few games are made for the artistry any more.

Of course indie gaming has also taken off in the last 10 years, which was great!

Online distribution has allowed for more exploitation. With great power comes great responsibility.

Companies like EA, Activision, Ubisoft, BioWare, Bungie, Blizzard, and Bethesda have sold their soul to the devil because they became too successful for their own good. The money corrupted the art and they will never produce the same kind of great art they once did.

Look to small, new companies for art. You are not going to find art at McDonalds.

When you vote with your wallet, you're not criticizing them or even protesting what made you choose competitors, because the company doesn't see why that happened or still thinks the greed is worth it

Even people voting with wallets on a larger scale and the stock dropping can still easily result in a company not learning their lesson, especially with monopoly market shares

How about games that keep updating, like World of Warcraft?

People who don't use or pay for the products can organize boycott campaigns.

Companies can misinterpret such boycott campaigns as genuine market signals. Sometimes, you can immediately recognize that the boycott campaigners are not real customers, but competitors.

You cannot fake flow of money in the long term. In the short term, you can fake more demand and withdraw it if you have a lot of money.

I would not listen to boycott campaigns unless they are supported by consistently shrinking demand.

They are not going to listen to feedback, anyway. It takes time for large companies to listen to shrinking demands. Let them take time.

This is why it was untainable against Guild Wars 1 - green/yellow corrupted by orange system After 2008.

No cash shop. Online rpg.

It seems that CD Project Red is the only goliath sized company that is not playing into this for now. It is interesting to observe how they manage to stay put in all this mania and manage to produce humongous pieces of art.
