What Are You Reading Right Now? [Book Recommendations & Insights]

Good pivot from Greene, just observed (Edit: referring to his upcoming November release Law of the Sublime).

He'll make a hella money from this no pun intended; perhaps its a crisis of conscience he's writing it, natural growth, market positioning or a combination.

It'll be spiritual therapy for all the sociopaths he's produced that have been sending him fan mail about all the riches and problems that came with it.

He'll get a lotta hate mail though from all the sociopaths that went hardcore with his laws but.

The new rebranding of the "Eckhart Tolle" for sociopaths though as the undertone I think will work surprisingly better than people many realise.

It'll be a cocktail of basic self-insight, half-baked inner explorations that dazzle people that have never heard a word like "Astral Projection" and precisely how the descriptions of the book so far read, an intersection of science and public opinion on the not so dangerous yet corrupted topic that is consciousness in the hands of people that put profit first. I'll take a gander.

I'm reading The Master and His Emissary by Ian McGilchrist. It's a chunky dense book about how the two parts of the brain function, and how studies of the right brain have been neglected, and the greater ramifications on society.

I'm also reading The Alabaster Girl by Zan Perrion prompted by one of the topics on here. Will I become a master seducer? I doubt it, but it's a fun read into the mind of one.

To truly love something is to grant that thing freedom. It is to hold it in an open, outstretched palm of your hand without clenching over it.

Surfaces and Essences by Hofstadter, because Leo kinda encouraged to read it. You would not think that cognitive science book will be so beautiful.

I also wish to read books about nature and biology, for example, Jane Goodall books

Robert Greene got a stroke while promoting his book Law of Human nature. Very unfortunate for him.

Subsequently, he wrote Law of the Sublime. I am more interested in this book but unable to find a copy in library.

It releases next month on November 10th 2026, you can preorder it now! I'm also very excited to read it.

Robert Greene appeals to lower levels of consciousness, so if someone is reading them, I would only be doing so scientifically.

Robert Greene for example, doesn't discriminate between cultural trends and selfhood, personality inclinations and the environments that support them versus broad generalisations based on biased sampling, nor the character of a culture and the impacts this has in areas pertinent to his books versus the character of a person. Because of this as well, his evolutionary perspectives are usurped by preliminary biases warped by personal experience he hasn't fully brought context to.

Which of his books have you read?

I think you're missing the point of his books, he synthesizes history into concepts that apply to day to day life. I think on the contrary what he teaches in books like 48 laws of power is very high consciousness; if you don't understand the shadow sides of the human psyche you will be caught off guard by it and not able to act effectively in the world.

Shadow work is essential to becoming a well rounded human being that can be effective in society.

@enchanted I've never really gotten into Shakespeare apart from having to read Romeo & Juliet in high school but I watched Rome HBO lately and Anthony and Cleopatra's story was pretty cool to witness. How is the play?

@LordFall Yeah that's why I said examine like a scientist, parse my words carefully; I don't believe the laws of power are high consciousness, at least in the way he has framed them. If they were actually the "Laws of High Consciousness", that would be even more fraudulent compared to a book geared towards actually determining the "Laws of Consciousness Power". Moreover, I find it interesting you've classified Robert so fondly, as if depicting what he's done as the best version of what can be done; rather than thinking with a critical mind. To what owes your personal endorsement to give Robert's views credibility?

Yes that's fair, it depends on what we mean by high consciousness.

I find that he summarizes deep truths about human nature through entertaining historical examples. I'm sure there are other books that are more rigorous in their psychological understanding but his work is fun to read and gives you quick history lessons, so I find myself learning a lot each time I read even a few pages.

I was just reading a passage about becoming more influential with people by resisting the urge to prove you're right in conversations and instead focusing on how other people make good points. This helped me right away because oftentimes I engage in aggressive intellectual debates and perhaps win the argument, but I don't think it convinces people because I make it adversarial more than collaborative. He names a few times where this tendency has backfired on people and it's led me to introspect on my own style of conversation.

If you read the books with an open mind and aim to improve your own behaviour, they are tremendously useful, I've found! I wouldn't let the dark psychology angle stop you from giving him a shot, I think the way he exposes all of our shadow tendencies to gain control is what's led me to increase my consciousness of those traits both in others and in myself. It resulted in more productive and healthy conduct many years ago after reading 48 Laws of Power, and now, reading this more recent book, I'm already getting some pretty deep insights and I'm not even halfway through the book!

Robert Greene has said multiple times, on record, that the 48 Laws of Power are more a guide to be aware of power dynamics, how they are used & wielded. It isn't a list of traits you are meant to embody/action to get what you want. Although, he admits that this is how many people read and interpret the book. He is often illustrating lower consciousness methods of force and power to raise awareness.

The book has been an asset for me working with state and federal clients. Understanding power dynamics so I am not seen as a threat, and instead an asset. The bureaucracy and power plays when you deal with professionals in a work environment is a minefield. The book essentially helped me navigate the minefield.

@LordFall I'll stick to 'proving I'm right' as opposed to avoiding the act of being straightforward in conversations then.

Yes. I don't deny this. The truth often arrives with a nice serving of bullshit.

Sometimes information is delivered in a unpalatable way. Indigestion.

I think we each receive in very, very different ways. I am certainly not free of my own little mind interpretations O.o
