What is depression meta-physically?

26 posts in this topic

Depression is a lack of serotonin and some other chemicals in the brain.
In a meta perspective I don’t believe it exists.

It is important to acknowledge some mental illness has a physiological component.

yes, precisely.

it might also be a matter of genetic predisposition to experiencing more negative affect in general.  ane differences in neuroanatomy and neurochemistry as well. with bipolar disorder, for example, the brain goes through cycles of increased flexibility vs increased rigidity, which corresponds to manic and depressed phases.

but the brain does exist?^_^

anyone who has ever experienced depression can probably attest to the fact that it is more real than "serotonin and some other chemicals in the brain".

@Joseph Maynor what is your take on the meta-physical aspects of depression?

It depends on how we interpret the past and also how we treat certain things in the present.
