@LordFall you are speculating. You even gave evidence for your speculation. Do you know OP was triggered? No. Hence, speculation.

There’s a difference between pure speculation and an educated guess. Why are you so triggered about it? He explained himself further. There’s only so much to go off in the original post.

I discovered a local chicken restaurant thru Instagram and ate there a couple days ago. Realized that chicken is God, so it was totally worth it. Words and pictures and reels don’t do it justice. I was making love to that chicken.

This is maybe the one thing of value I won’t have anymore. There’s some decent recommendations for like restaurants and shops. I’ll have to lean on word of mouth more now but even that opens up more for me just by virtue of talking to people. You see? You trade the convenience for earned experience.

My best friend actually recommended it through Instagram direct  message. It’s ironic, they live with me and could have easily showed the video to me and we could have watched it together, but they decided to message me about it lol

edit: I  got clarification just now (they’re right next to me): they said they sent it through IG cus they’re autistic :D

To clarify - I am not objecting to the quality of your reasoning. You are correct that speculation isn't inherently illegitimate.

I am objecting to the fact that you apparently presented an inference about OP's internal state with more certainty than the available evidence warrants. It remains that you speculated - "educated guess".

Quote

Why are you so triggered about it?

This is unnecessary and weakens your argument because it's another speculation. There is zero evidence for this.

____

Obviously you don't have to take this on board, but attributing an internal psychological state to someone and then building a question around that inference sort of shoots you in the foot if you want to engage in charitable, good faith conversation. It is a failure to relate to the person and can polarise them against you (put them in the defensive). And if they reply with some charged emotional defence at being "psychoanalysed" (or state inference), it can be very easy to use the defensive posture as more evidence for your inference (closed loop, self sealing model). It is a huge caveat to approaching interactions without asking neutral, open ended questions prior to labelling someone as emotionally compromised/jealous/envious/feeling negative or what-have-you. I just wouldn't personally prematurely convert a psychological hypothesis into the premise of your interaction for the above reasons. I make this mistake very often myself, which might be why I saw it when you posted.

@Natasha Tori Maru

Fair breakdown on phrasing, but in practice, reading between the lines gets you to the root of an issue much faster than sterile neutrality. Most times I think my assumption is correct that Instagram makes people uncomfortable because it gives them status anxiety and it's easier to cope with the ostrich strategy vs stepping up to the plate.

@Lyubov seems to have put enough thought into his brand strategy that I don't find it necessary to scrutinize him further on how he wants to use social media. I think most people could use a little push towards having an antifragile mindset over the mainstream view that social media is simply toxic.

I've decided to delete this app. I believe it does more harm than good. For what I'm doing I don't need it on my main phone. Has anyone decided to detox fro social media and short form videos? I believe I'm done for good with the app. It is just a gross place and it's not worth being there for me anymore.

Yes short form content does a lot of harm to society. It's imperative we reduce the consumption of short form content as much as possible. It fries our attention spans and thinking skills. Cal Newport talks a lot about this too on his YouTube channel. Reading is a good antidote and is even more important, radical, and therapeutic because of this.

Humans waited for thousands of years for something that they can share with the whole world but some of them deleted the app.

There are a lot of good use cases for short form content. The best one is event recaps and travel reels. If you do activities with your friends or community often times people take pictures but if a picture tells a 1000 words then I'd say a video is worth 100 pictures. You can capture organic fun moments and relive them years laters.

You can also use Instagram to keep in touch with people you would've lost touch with a long time ago. Having someone on IG is way more powerful than having their number on your phone.

Doom scrolling is a pretty big waste of time and it does take advantage of people's psychology. I don't really do it myself, when I watch reels I save them in my Obsidian for content ideas or events I can host myself. If I look at hot girls it gives me motivation to level up to get them. Sometimes I get in a funk and it makes me more depressed and self-pitying but I can usually snap myself out of it pretty quickly.

Attention is a trainable behavioural resource - so algorithmic short form media isn't just this innocent entertainment source - the environment is deliberately curated to provide you with novelty & emotional salience. It ends up a its own personalised reward stream.

Meta deliberately removed natural stopping points and created an almost frictionless environment to leverage continued engagement - good or bad.

For anyone curious you should look into the recent lawsuits from late 2026 + internal research Meta performed themselves. It is becoming harder and harder for them to pretend they were ignorant to potential harm. The lawsuits do not mean they are admitting liability or are guilty. Meta has argued they performed research to identify and mitigate problems (compulsive use and harm) from features such as infinite scroll, autoplay and notifications. They reject the interpretation from the recent 2026 litigation (still contested I believe) they knew about the harm that could be caused.

I removed the apps from my phone - I occasionally browse on a terminal.

It was one of the best things I did for wellbeing, happiness and attention.

How all things are designed now, or to keep your attention because the longer you spend the more adverts you can get through and the more personal data is collected.

Not only online, also physical stores

I deleted social media about 10 years ago for several reasons but this is one of them.

I worked in different IT projects, and know the inside process from a management perspective and development perspective.

Unless there are strict laws with severe consequences companies don't have any (moral) restrictions.

Privacy erosion is an underrated problem. Current younger generation don't know the concept of privacy anymore.

You are not free if everything is recorded.

I think it's finally becoming a hot topic now with the current rise of flock cameras in the US.

I want to address what I call “the glue.”

What I’ve noticed which holds it all together for many people is the idea they need to be on the app or else they will miss some important bit of information, current events or miss out on opportunities social or business. Instagram sells a lot of young people the dream they can become a sorta quasi influencer type if they reach enough followers and sell something, what is that something? Well for a lot of accounts I’ve come across it’s unclear to me… I think they’re selling a dream, or motivation on how to grow your socials. It’s just so circulars. You scroll and post on IG to grow your IG to the point you can eventually have other people scrolling for you where you tell them how to grow your IG...

Apart from the multi level marketing crap there are some actual brands on there selling products, clothes, restaurants, tour guides, etc. If you’re self employed then IG is actually worth posting on. It’s sorta like one big commercial though. I remember we used to mute the tv during commercials. Reels is filled with ads and it’s not as simple as muting.

I work a lot so doom scrolling is something I’ve had an issue with. It is a very easy was to sorta “relax” after and between work. It’s kinda like taking constant smoke breaks.

I’m testing this myself now at 35. I could see it being a lot harder to not be on this app if I was single in my twenties. If I was ten years younger I’d probably have a much harder time being off it. The thing is I still need to be sometimes posting on it which I plan to continue to do. Even after detoxing and getting off the consuming side I still need to feed the beast, it’s just reality now.

Never had it! :D

Yeah, OnlyFans was always more my schtick, plus I get paid for it.

I'm a direct guy, and OnlyFans just removes the foreplay.

I just don't understand why people would pay for these things though.

Some might say "How do you deal with the morality of it?", my answer to that is straightforward.

If she wasn't giving it to Chad X she'd be giving it to Chad Y.

Math was never my strong-suit though, so when they say they wanted to make me feel special so they gave me the inheritance they received from their parents, I'm like "Well okay, but that's on you! You dig." Plus I had to give 75% percent to my manager coz I'm under contract, so even if I wanted, yeah.

Listen, I made a course to help people that are interested in stacking wallets by joining OnlyFans, its only about $2999, I reduced the amount by $10,000 for the next 30 days. I teach LOOKSMAXXING. I tell you what to wear, the operations to get and the rocks to use to smash your jaw with to get the 'edges' you're looking for.

Some people say I don't have a soul, I always say in response, "Look, if you pay me money for me to say I have a soul, I'll do it. I'll say anything you want me to say for the right price. But listen, you've only got a few minutes left of credits before you can stay talkin to me, so use those credits wisely."

People these days hey. I like it straightforward, direct, no mess. That's how the money stays clean in yeah I'll admit, it can sometimes be dirty business, but that's just coz some of my clients end up homeless. And shit, I ain't no financial adviser, I'm runnin a business! Pay up, sell that goddamn sleeping bag then I'll see if we can keep talkin!

It is a discussion worth having but let's take one step back and admit though that social media gets a lot of undeserved hate. The glue is simply entropy, the rent, capitalism or survival my guy.

Let's not fall into this superstitious mindset that because Zuckerberg owns it now its a lightning rod for everything evil in the universe. There are plenty of people selling nonsense on there but that's just like real life. If anything it is just extremely efficient at letting us experience society as a microcosm that can fit in your pocket.

I think it gets scapegoated for a lot of the problems of society BECAUSE it's such a great product and so efficient at what it does.

Instagram is basically a digital mall or shopping district. If you don't want to go to the mall that's fine. When we start to call the mall the epitome of what's bad about society I think we've gone off the deep end a bit here.

You can't even really call it anti-social since as I've said you can definitely use it to join and build communities and attend events. Also plenty of meditation, healthy foods, travel and spa centres type of pages.

adobestock-zuzana-drottninggatan-.jpg

Now let's go back to my point that I do agree it's fair to want/need a detox once in a while from social media but once again that can be said for society as a whole. I think that having a negative relationship with social media comes mainly from our own psyche and the paradigms we operate under such as consumer vs producer, victim mindset vs growth mindset, etc. If we utilize it like a marketing channel like any other and learn to avoid the pitfalls that our individual psyches fall into with it then the pros far outweigh the cons IMO.

I can relate with you
I keep my phone 100% free from social media
since I can easily find my self in bed and doom scrolling
I try to detox from social media every once in a while

I did tried a 20 days monk mode (no big dopamine hits ) "music, videos, instagram, youtube, etc" anything non work related not allowed
and that detox my brain help me get a lot more clarity

However at the same time I do make educational content to help people with 3D
Screenshot from 2026-07-18 11-50-45.png

and making short/long video to promote my 3D Houdini course xD now
Funny am not the only one that when limited my social media I start making more video on social media

also social media has its positive side i can learn a lot from the right channels tho doing that everyday is unhealthy instead investing that time in my business is the right call maybe sometime a month I can spend it on social media

Fair enough, I would just encourage people to not treat is as a benign product that just comes down to how you handle it yourself. Just like alcohol or smoking, really no amount of it is healthy and we even have regulations in place. I would relate more to your point of view if social media was regulated and we had a clearer picture of how it affects people, but we are living in the dark ages of this and more and more research has began to prove how harmful IG is to teenagers. Look this up, it is where the bulk of the research is. It is incredibly harmful to young people's pscyhe. When I have a child I will never let them on social media. Look it up, meta is one of the most litigated companies on earth currently. I can see your hustle and mating strategy depends on it and it's really your only option other than hitting the bars so you will defend it, none of those factors tie me to it so I don't get any of those benefits and only junk fed to me. I mean, you already said yourself even you need to detox and take a break from it... so my overall point is until it's been really studied further and safety has been engineered into it, it should be framed as a product that is toxic for you even if in the process of using it you can build your brand and meet girls through it. Alcohol works wonders for meeting women, but in the long run it takes its tole.

I think Instagram is great for finding fitness stuff. You don't need to listen to a 15 minutes discourse on youtube.
Just a 30 second snippet on why the exercise is beneficial. :P

@Lyubov I am keen to hear back after sometime of having no access to Instagram. I found that, despite me thinking I was relaxing or unwinding, I was left feeling slightly empty, numb and seeking further stimulation. It really disrupted my wind down routines.
