@LordFall you are speculating. You even gave evidence for your speculation. Do you know OP was triggered? No. Hence, speculation.

There’s a difference between pure speculation and an educated guess. Why are you so triggered about it? He explained himself further. There’s only so much to go off in the original post.

I discovered a local chicken restaurant thru Instagram and ate there a couple days ago. Realized that chicken is God, so it was totally worth it. Words and pictures and reels don’t do it justice. I was making love to that chicken.

This is maybe the one thing of value I won’t have anymore. There’s some decent recommendations for like restaurants and shops. I’ll have to lean on word of mouth more now but even that opens up more for me just by virtue of talking to people. You see? You trade the convenience for earned experience.

My best friend actually recommended it through Instagram direct  message. It’s ironic, they live with me and could have easily showed the video to me and we could have watched it together, but they decided to message me about it lol

edit: I  got clarification just now (they’re right next to me): they said they sent it through IG cus they’re autistic :D

To clarify - I am not objecting to the quality of your reasoning. You are correct that speculation isn't inherently illegitimate.

I am objecting to the fact that you apparently presented an inference about OP's internal state with more certainty than the available evidence warrants. It remains that you speculated - "educated guess".

Quote

Why are you so triggered about it?

This is unnecessary and weakens your argument because it's another speculation. There is zero evidence for this.

____

Obviously you don't have to take this on board, but attributing an internal psychological state to someone and then building a question around that inference sort of shoots you in the foot if you want to engage in charitable, good faith conversation. It is a failure to relate to the person and can polarise them against you (put them in the defensive). And if they reply with some charged emotional defence at being "psychoanalysed" (or state inference), it can be very easy to use the defensive posture as more evidence for your inference (closed loop, self sealing model). It is a huge caveat to approaching interactions without asking neutral, open ended questions prior to labelling someone as emotionally compromised/jealous/envious/feeling negative or what-have-you. I just wouldn't personally prematurely convert a psychological hypothesis into the premise of your interaction for the above reasons. I make this mistake very often myself, which might be why I saw it when you posted.

@Natasha Tori Maru

Fair breakdown on phrasing, but in practice, reading between the lines gets you to the root of an issue much faster than sterile neutrality. Most times I think my assumption is correct that Instagram makes people uncomfortable because it gives them status anxiety and it's easier to cope with the ostrich strategy vs stepping up to the plate.

@Lyubov seems to have put enough thought into his brand strategy that I don't find it necessary to scrutinize him further on how he wants to use social media. I think most people could use a little push towards having an antifragile mindset over the mainstream view that social media is simply toxic.

I've decided to delete this app. I believe it does more harm than good. For what I'm doing I don't need it on my main phone. Has anyone decided to detox fro social media and short form videos? I believe I'm done for good with the app. It is just a gross place and it's not worth being there for me anymore.

Yes short form content does a lot of harm to society. It's imperative we reduce the consumption of short form content as much as possible. It fries our attention spans and thinking skills. Cal Newport talks a lot about this too on his YouTube channel. Reading is a good antidote and is even more important, radical, and therapeutic because of this.

Humans waited for thousands of years for something that they can share with the whole world but some of them deleted the app.

There are a lot of good use cases for short form content. The best one is event recaps and travel reels. If you do activities with your friends or community often times people take pictures but if a picture tells a 1000 words then I'd say a video is worth 100 pictures. You can capture organic fun moments and relive them years laters.

You can also use Instagram to keep in touch with people you would've lost touch with a long time ago. Having someone on IG is way more powerful than having their number on your phone.

Doom scrolling is a pretty big waste of time and it does take advantage of people's psychology. I don't really do it myself, when I watch reels I save them in my Obsidian for content ideas or events I can host myself. If I look at hot girls it gives me motivation to level up to get them. Sometimes I get in a funk and it makes me more depressed and self-pitying but I can usually snap myself out of it pretty quickly.

Attention is a trainable behavioural resource - so algorithmic short form media isn't just this innocent entertainment source - the environment is deliberately curated to provide you with novelty & emotional salience. It ends up a its own personalised reward stream.

Meta deliberately removed natural stopping points and created an almost frictionless environment to leverage continued engagement - good or bad.

For anyone curious you should look into the recent lawsuits from late 2026 + internal research Meta performed themselves. It is becoming harder and harder for them to pretend they were ignorant to potential harm. The lawsuits do not mean they are admitting liability or are guilty. Meta has argued they performed research to identify and mitigate problems (compulsive use and harm) from features such as infinite scroll, autoplay and notifications. They reject the interpretation from the recent 2026 litigation (still contested I believe) they knew about the harm that could be caused.

I removed the apps from my phone - I occasionally browse on a terminal.

It was one of the best things I did for wellbeing, happiness and attention.

How all things are designed now, or to keep your attention because the longer you spend the more adverts you can get through and the more personal data is collected.

Not only online, also physical stores

I deleted social media about 10 years ago for several reasons but this is one of them.

I worked in different IT projects, and know the inside process from a management perspective and development perspective.

Unless there are strict laws with severe consequences companies don't have any (moral) restrictions.

Privacy erosion is an underrated problem. Current younger generation don't know the concept of privacy anymore.

You are not free if everything is recorded.

I think it's finally becoming a hot topic now with the current rise of flock cameras in the US.
