@Emerald Has your position changed any on this or are you still confident in your initial assessment?

I still have the same point of view as before.

I don't think her claim of NGRI is true. I believe she lucidly killed her children with full intent... and not because she was in psychosis.

But because of how Massachusetts law operates, it may be impossible to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that she wasn't legally insane when killing her kids. That's just such a hard (if not impossible) thing to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Though, I think this case would be pretty open and shut if the burden of proof were on the defense to prove her NGRI.

The people online who are claiming she didn't even kill her kids have reached levels of retardation unseen of before

I haven't followed it. What's her likely motive?

Of course, only she knows what her motive is. And there are many potentials motives that a murderous mother could have for killing her children.

I just don't believe that she was legally insane when she did it. I think it was a deliberate choice made within her regular mental state.

>be typical young white mother growing up in the insanity of Trumpist America

>suffer depression, anxiety etc etc etc

>get fed cocktail of drugs by concerned family, still feel like shit inside

>can’t stand raising kids, want to be a “good mother” but also hate that you’re now trapped in a suburban hellhole

>come up with some half-baked plan to murder your kids and kinda-sorta kill yourself but not really to get out of your existential nightmare

>suicide failed and now you’re in jail, come up with some lame excuse about “hearing voices” and other pop-psychology bullshit to justify why you felt your kids had to die to get out of your own suffering

>half the world eats it up

That’s how I see it

I mean yeah, but also, you can't know for certain with our current evidence what went through her head exactly. Best you can do is estimate, and I personally estimate that she's culpable, IE. she knew it was wrong.

She never had a “psychotic episode” up until this attack. She deliberately told her husband to go on a long errand run to have enough time to go through with the murders. She deliberately, ONE BY ONE, brought her children down to the basement and strangled them. When one of the children RAN AWAY she was lucid enough to CHASE THEM DOWN and finally kill them. During all this she ANSWERED A PHONE CALL from her husband and calmly gave him more directions.

No one who has a psychotic break is in control enough to do any of that. Not to mention that psychotic people are usually a greater danger to themselves than they are to anyone else. Having a psychotic episode doesn’t turn you into the Joker from Batman, masterfully enacting some murderous grand plan; it turns you into a babbling mess high out of your fucking mind completely naked in the living room crying about how your asshole maths teacher tried to eat you in your dreams.

I genuinely have no idea how anyone could look at this evidence and conclude she was genuinely psychotic. It seems way more likely that she made it all up to deal with her own emotional bullshit and found a catchy way to excuse her murders.

I also believe it's at least some version of this list.

I think it's basically what @Apparition of Jack said, with an addition. She was living in a hell and wanted out, and had some strange belief that her kids should go with her, then was successful at taking the kids out but not herself, then woke up traumatized in a whole new world that wasn't her typical hellhole, and had to come up with some reasonable thing she could believe to be true, so she deceived herself that that's actually what happened. Just think about what the first 2-4 weeks would have been like afterwards. The average human mind in that situation would be so malleable/suggestible that it could buy any culturally acceptable story. I'd wager she was actually largely talked into believing it from those around her trying to make sense of it, while sympathizing with her.

What if this is just fascination + identity + seriousness being inflated into universal importance?

Listen carefully to the diary entries read in court.

One of the children was suffering from a health issue and she felt bad for herself for having to deal with it.  Screw what the kid is going through look at what I have to deal with.  Woe is me.

She wasnt the center of attention anymore and she couldnt handle it.  So she concocted something to get some attention - and a million bucks - and she got it.

If there wasnt one sane man on that jury that nut job would have walked.

She might be innocent but for sure must be away from society(I think it means jailed).

Seems like a failing of government where the rule of law isn’t able to produce an outcome which the public sees as justice. I’m getting a lot of right wingers (bots) who are using this as propaganda against the left. Obviously she killed her kids and should be incarcerated for the rest of her life.

What is the angle against the left?

She's basically be institutionalized for life there isn't really another plausible outcome. Mistrial is not its gonna end like that.

You think she was pressured into a trad-wife life and hated it and this was her flip out moment? It makes sense but I can't really wrap my mind around it, seems quite insane.

It's just set up such to be overly binary. It's impossible to prove what went on in someone head. Not having to prove insanity is basically taking someone's word for it as far as I can see.

It's exactly why most of the US got rid of that standard after some dude that tried to kill Ronald Reagan got aqcuited on insanity.

There's no guarantee of length if your institutionalized. They assess you every year and release you if your clear. She could be released 5 years from now. Especially if you think she's lying, because she's not actually insane then.

Being institutionalized is not punishment. Shows again how binary Massachusetts insanity defense is.

She was poisoned by neurotoxins, I think something like a fifth or so of doctors with the ability to prescribe psychiatric medications should lose their licenses. These drugs are no joke but many doctors don't understand them.

The line between love and insanity is thinner than what people would like to believe.

Post partum depression = love your kids too much, hence become depressed

Post partum psychosis = love your kids too much, hence lose contact with reality

They give you an overabundance of pills in each bottle, so you can easily have an adverse reaction to one of the psych medications after a very short period of time. Then when you look into her cabinet you see mostly full bottles and be like " oh she didn't take them", it's like...no, they just give you a lot per trip.

The last psychiatric medications I took was Zoloft 20 years  and in two days it made me extremely depressed extremely quickly, had to dump a full bottle

Like I could be wrong, but from what I can tell from a few hours of research is this is just a mother being poisoned by psychiatric medications, hopefully this is a wake up call to psychiatric providers

I watched a video of a psychiatrist arguing that possibility yesterday.
