What are your hobbies?

17 posts in this topic

I feel like people on this forum (me included) get too caught up in self-improvement to the point where we neglect what started this website in the first place. According to Maslow's hierarchy, having hobbies for their own sake is one of the most fundamental pillars of finding purpose, social connection and self-esteem. So my question to you is: what are your hobbies? How did you get to starting that hobby? How has it helped you develop your self-esteem, connection with others and of course finding some kind of purpose?

For me, I have been trying to find a different hobby for a while now. I regularly go the gym, but I would not count that as a hobby. More like maintaining health and muscle get bigger = good. So far I have tried hip hop dancing and BJJ. Both had their pros and cons, but recently I quit the latter as well as the former and am in search of a new one. I tried bouldering today, but I just could not see myself doing this 2x a week.

Obviously your answers do not need to be sports related. Any hobby is welcome. I have just personally been looking for a fun way to include cardio in my routine. I am giving volleyball a try too, hopefully that will yield better results.

I used to like video games but they're pretty boring to me now. I like to watch fantasy tv shows and anime. Watching The Tudors right now it's pretty dope.

Hiking/mountaineering, racing, learning languages & etymology behind them, watching medical gore, chemistry experiments in a kitchen lab and on myself, cooking, studying the evils of humanity, collecting and archiving media, skiing, shitposting.

Most of my hobbies, main one being spirituality, are rather extreme; life gets boring otherwise.

How do you end up with that as a hobby?

Because it's medical or because it's gore?

Reading, meditating, browsing Reddit, taking walks, the occasional video game, light hiking, going to the beach, cooking. I get the feeling that sometimes people may feel inadequate in certain groups if their lives don't sound that glamorous - like, "Yeah, I cook spaghetti in my free time." xD

I think it was the singer Aurora who included masturbating as one of her hobbies. Gotta be honest.

I'm trying to get into table tennis.

I don't know why Leo didn't include hobbies in his 'how to get laid' videos. It's probably the reason why you don't have a girlfriend.

"Not believing your own thoughts, you’re free from the primal desire: the thought that reality should be different than it is. You realise the wordless, the unthinkable. You understand that any mystery is only what you yourself have created. In fact, there’s no mystery. Everything is as clear as day. It’s simple, because there really isn’t anything. There’s only the story appearing now. And not even that.” — Byron Katie

I have painted for miniatures for over a decade, but relatively recently started to build gunpla. The difference in cost and hobby gear needed is like entering a non-abusive relationship for the first time.

Bit of both. It's sort of the next evolutionary step after I exhausted and got bored of all the standard gore like cartel/ISIS executions, runthegauntlet, and other stuff that shall not be named. That's now in the 'evils of humanity' category, no longer as mindless entertainment, but applied to my understanding and love of reality. Medical gore in particular gives me insight into the outlandish diseases and conditions that exist out there, the incredible resilience of the human body and general anatomy, as well as the degrees of stupidity/neglect/unluckiness people exhibit or experience to end up in some of these situations.

I like to day dream about the kind of life in which I do a lot of interesting hobbies that I'm passionate about. Does that count? LOL

@LambdaDelta

Why did you watch gore in the first place? What's the appeal?

Don't you get disgusted / disturbed by it?

Not at all. While it started out as simple edginess of a teenager, there was deeper psychological and even existential meaning behind it. Hardly anything can disturb me, which is both a blessing and a curse; I attribute a big chunk of my rapid spiritual growth to this trait. Some months ago shortly after the peak of a powerful LSD trip I browsed r/MedicalGore and was awestruck by the absolute Beauty; that's a gear higher than Leo watching porn on 5-MeO-DMT. I also like to stare at pictures of demonic entities and listening to music in endless loops until breaking through to Love. Such a radical approach won't suit everyone, but it's a tried and true principle that whatever disgusts and disturbs you most veils behind it the deepest Love. At this point I've done so much shadow work that it wouldn't be inaccurate to say my current shadow is displays of traditional feminine love; I appreciate it, but am subtly uncomfortable giving and receiving it.

There's an ocean of difference between playing an instrument and gaming as a hobby in terms of attractiveness. Certain hobbies makes you less attractive if nothing else.

If you thing about it, the hobbies that women find attractive almost always bring some kind of value to them while unattractive hobbies do the inverse. It's a very self-biased perspective. "It's cringe to be into things that aren't useful to me specifically."
