I went to an opera this week. Everyone was wearing the same formal attire, people paid 30€ for a glass of champagne, and applauded just because others around were doing it even when they obviously didn't truly feel like it. All of high society is one giant conformity, and Britain of the Victorian era is its most extreme caricature.

Doing anything whatsoever out of obligation is conformity.

1 + 1 = 2 is groupthink.

But thats not bad conformity.

Bad conformity would be to buy into the math culture, to believe in rationalist superiority etc.

Running, Marathons, Gym, Instagram Filters

I do run Marathons to train for fights, also when I do something physically challenging as a marathon, it can put me into a Flow-State, deep reflection on myself and my entire life and to endure, use suffering as a way of growth and facing reality no matter how hard it is.

But I get it. Most of the people running are conforming to the cause of Marathons, but we can't just throw the baby out with the bath water, we can't just eliminate all conformity, maybe we can but also it's possible to transcend conformity while also being in it unattached

Good observation. Our sense of obligation comes from our family and cultural upbringing. If we didn't conform we would be ostracized and criticised. We conform out of fear and unconsciousness

I agree. I love running. Conformity is not a negative to be ashamed about 😉

This should be clear. You don't need to stop doing something just because Leo said it is conformity. If you do, this is double conformity.

It's the same when spiritual people talk about 'sacred duty to reality' and whatnot. There's no such thing. Duty is just easier to handle since it's limited in scope, but it's an artificial concealment of other options. Such an attitude betrays a lack of trust in oneself and a misunderstanding of what Love/Goodness/Sovereignty, and a slew of other facets are.

Oftentimes there's a double standard: easy decisions are framed as voluntary, done out of the goodness of their heart; but when it's complicated or costly, they fall back to the duty explanation.

I think 'mathematicians' would fit better there.

Using Windows.

Poor example because an OS's function is to be a universal unifying standard.

There is barely a choice about using it.

Basically all cults are conformity like Veganism, where there is a lot of pressure to be part of the club and have some self rightiousness

MacOS has also some cult-ish behavior where they have this sense of superiority while they are lacking features and freedom in every sense.

And another example is people who hate on AI. It is almost a badge of honor to hate on AI. And when they are talking about their hate you can just sense their pride because they know that that is the collective sentiment at this moment. But when the collective sentiments switches their own opinion switches too.

To be in the middle of the sheep pack is safe. At the end conformity is good for survival and it is comfortable.
