I am, for sure, addicted to sugar. Ever since I was a kid, i used to eat sprinkles straight from the container.

I just had a McFlurry an hour ago.

Natural sugar intake from regular Whole Foods is ok. Refined sugar is for brothers.

You mean refined white sugar, right? Not natural sugars like those found in fruit or similar sources?

The problem with sugar is not that it is inherently unhealthy but that it doesnt provide health benefits. Its a missed opportunity.

And you can easily eat too much of it, which leads to overweight, which leads to ton of health benefits.

So basically a naturally skinny person eating a ton of veggies and healthy foods can also eat ice cream every day and be close to optimal health.

@Jannes A lot of veggies aren’t necessarily healthy, they’re full of antinutrients that prevent mineral absorption, irritate gut lining and tax the thyroid, and they often lead to bloating. They’re overrated.

@Eskilon Natural Sugar from fruit, berries, raw honey and starches like sweetpotato or white rice is Healthy sugar, and it comes with other minerals that support the intake of that sugar.

Refined/processed sugar is unhealthy yes.

I said vegetables in this context as a symbolic placeholder for foods which contain minerals and good stuff that you need.

I do believe that basically all veggies are healthy but I dont want to open that discussion.

And I didnt say sugar is unhealthy, I made a more nuanced point.

Me too.

I used to have severe allergies, digestive problems  and skin rashes since I was a kid. In the last years they were getting worse, I developed joint pains and much worse skin rashes that would not heal, and I found two things that helped - either strict carnivore, (which was a nightmare for me regarding sugar cravings) - and what I do now, which is eating the majority of my calories from carbs, BUT I need to not go overboard with the fats.

I can even eat straight table sugar or juices, honey, etc simple carbs (things I blamed before for instantly making my symptoms horrible) and I feel great as long as I I make a minimum of effort to not eat too much fat. And surprisingly this way I don't really want processed sugar almost at all.

Plus, an active lean body uses simple sugar much differently from a sedentary obese one.

It was a lightbulb moment for me when I realized "unhealthy sugar" - chocolate bars, donuts, sprinkles, milkshakes etc. are just blobs of fat with sugar. 20, 30+ grams of fat per 100g, alongside those 30, 40+ grams of sugar.

I do not experience this. After a salad or soup with veggies I feel great. Clearly, people eat lots of veggies without this happening. People are not stupid.

You know, a lot of this is personal and difficult because people are somewhat individual. Also, the food you eat I think can have seasonal considerations too.

Bryan Johnson, an individual and also the most measured person in the world only eats fruits and veggies plus supplements and doesn’t report these issues as an example.

I dispute that eating a bucket of refined sugar is bad for health.

Pure glucose is the energy of life.

One of those examples of group-think.

How do you know sugar is unhealthy?

@Leo Gura I am open to this idea. However, it being the pure energy of life isn’t a strong argument with looking at how the human body deals with how it metabolizes sugars.

Too much could be a bad thing, which I think is the general consensus of nutrition science.

If it was as simple as fuel for life we wouldn’t be dealing with people with diabetes for example. Diabetes is an issue with how the body regulates sugars and can be deadly if mishandled. Sugar definitely affects the homeostasis of the body… as I’ve learned in my layman understanding of this subject. So, to say it’s not bad is likely untrue simply because it’s pure energy.

Sugar entering the system causes a lot of metabolic reactions which are not good for health, apparently. It also depends on the nature the sugar is consumed.

The human body isn’t like a car that you just put glucose in. So, I’m open to learning more about why you think sugar isn’t bad… and I’m curious to understand the various scientific perspectives on why it’s currently considered bad by most mainstream nutrition understanding.
