This video completely changed the way I see Lex Fridman

21 posts in this topic

Some things said in the video might have been overblown, but I can’t help but agree with almost everything that was said. I can’t see Lex the same way anymore. It’s like having an insight, and now I can’t go back to seeing him the old way, as an innocent man who’s authentic and full of love, or whatever image or persona he’s trying to adopt.

It’s like the box in the picture: once you realize there’s another perspective, everything changes instantly.

@vinc3nc i never understood why such a random guy became so popular. Now I know it, thanks.

He is really annoying.

Powerful, famous, and wealthy people need an interviewer who will never challenge their corruption.

That's why Lex is perfect for the job.

This guy never called me . There is not even a single interview from him Ia could say was amazing. Was always hard to connect with his way of speaking. Somehow there was always something off. Is not always the case, sometimes some influencers had an effect on me and I gave credit just to discover the griftery later, like Albrey Marcus for example. Joe Rogan is another example that I always knew that there was something shady and fake. I think the ideia is to have a so big radar to bullshit that one is able to spot rigth away.

What always threw me off was his fake loving vibe.

Decoding the gurus episode on Lex is great too.

Yeah, I picked up on him being a bullshitter back when it was unpopular. I could tell from his behavior and mannerisms but it took him siding with grifters and taking morally reprehensible positions before people started to catch on.

The main thing that gave him away early on was his virtue signaling. Always talking about peace and love. He was a try-hard. Trying very hard to be loved by as many as possible and desperately wanting to fit in with famous people. IIRC, these were the main giveaways. Things just weren’t congruent.

It's fascinating how love can be used to whitewash corruption.

The Devil loves to be loved by a lover of love.

Tim Dillon's rant at the end was golden lol.

100% agree. That rant definitely applies to the likes of Bret, Eric Weinstein and Christopher Langan.

Sincere question, why do you guys think Lex is hiding where he went to school? I'm looking at this school on Wikipedia and it looks quite decent.

Wow, that is really deceptive the way he used MIT.   It reminds me of  popular spiritual teachers.  Being famous and being true are two entirely different things requiring different skills.

Yeah, I agree with this. I could never understand how or why people adored celebrities. I couldn't do it if I tried. Same with getting invested in which football team wins.

Its not always easy to see it though especially if its hidden well or if they believe their own bullshit. Its also possible that someone can start off with integrity and good intentions and then be corrupted by money, audience capture, fame etc.

I think a good practice is to stay agnostic on people, meaning that you realise you dont actually know them and that although they're saying things that do resonate with you, it doesn't mean you can over look the stuff that doesn't resonate or may even be problematic. I think we have a tendency to elevate people to almost prophet like status because we have some kind of para social relationship with them. Essentially dont idolise these personalities.

He has worked at MIT for 10 years.

Be careful with these Youtube "expose" videos. They aren't painting a real picture of the situation.

Lex has his problems, as we all do, but being a fraud is not one of them. He doesn't really pretend to be smart. I think what you see of him is just his dorky self. You can cringe at it, but it seems authentically him. That's just his personality.

I agree that hit pieces are part of the YouTube clown world and need to be taken with a grain of salt.  The issue is whether he misrepresented himself leading people to believe he was a professor.  Many years ago when I was working, I did collaborative projects with MIT Scientists so I am aware of their research laboratories, which had top notch people.  An example would be Richard Stallman who was an MIT trailblazer but never had interest in being a professor.
