It's important to meet people where they are at if you are to effectively teach someone. As a teacher you have to appreciate the degree of ignorance present with untrained minds and bodies or you just end up frustrating your students. 

Art teachers are particularly bad at this in my experience because they don't tend to be intellectually rigorous. 

Spiritual teachers can seriously mislead people if they don't appreciate the depth of ignorance of average people because of the effect their work has on the psyche.
