Capitalism dies - and then?

19 posts in this topic

The current form of untrammeled western capitalism comes to an end. It has become apparent that it is utterly unsustainable, it greedily devours itself.

What form of economy, society and government will follow?

Will we be wise enough to initiate the transition ourselves if we want to survive, or will we be forced by our own destructive behavior to change?

Yes, I mean its current form will change (and thus die)

Should've used other words

Anyway, into what will it evolve?

If we knew that, we'd already be there. We have to invent it first.

It's gonna be something that isn't any simple ideology.

One model is using a higher form of technology to develop a Resource Based Economy. Yet, according to this model the average human consciousness hasn't risen high enough to use technology for higher purposes - such as economic and ecological sustainability. The current stage of human consciousness is primarily using technology for war, personal/group power, exploitation and corporate profits. Peter Joseph describes the model nicely:

@Forestluv I don’t think a RBE will be used anytime soon in our lifetimes. I think it’ll either be socialism type of economic system or a new type of capitalism.

Though, I do think Mars will be something like an RBE once it’s fully set up.

Worker cooperatives?

@Tim R

I'd highly recommend anyone interested in this topic to check out the works of Charles Eisenstein, Michael Linton and Daniel Schmachtenberger. As well as the Ecovillage, ReGen Villages and Transition Town movements.

General idea is that we're moving towards more collective ownership and sharing. It will be less about accumulating personal wealth as support is found in community rather than personal accomplishment.

As far as government, research something called Sociocracy as well as Holacracy. More consensus, more decentralization.

In other words, from Stage Orange to Green.

It as already happening all around the world. These ideas may not have cracked the mainstream consciousness but they're certainly not fringe anymore. People are already living this way.

Yes, worker coops are likely a big piece of the puzzle.

I wouldn't be so sure ;)

Jason Hickel from the Extinction Rebellion has some cool thoughts on how it will look like to live in post-capitalism. His new book Less is More explores some of the questions about he future of jobs, health and education when we finally stop economy from growing and devouring the planet.

I can't wait for the changes in the world to happen in a sense. The way we currently live is completely twisted. Work, work, then work some more, then hire someone to do tasks you could have done if you weren't working non-stop.

I followed Jacque Fresco (The Venus Project, resource-based economy) for many years. His work was even inspiration for my master thesis (a high-tech machine / building that provides all needed resources using only renewable energy). But after the years I´ve recognized the problems with this concept and why it did not go mainstream. To put in a nutshell the concept of Jacque Fresco´s resource-based economy is much too radical. For example, he designed concepts of the new cities completely from scratch ignoring all the historical & cultural evolution & heritage. The other big problem is the idea that ´science´ should be in the middle of everything. As we learn lately the mainstream science is far away from the truth.

Anyway, the essence of a resource-based economy (an economy based on abundance of resources and not on scarcity) is 100% the right way to go evolutionally. My prediction is that a Universal basic income (as basic human right) is the first step to go and actually inevitable! But an Universal basic income not in a ´communist / socialistic´ way of implementation but rather achieving an Universal basic income through Technology. We should go small steps to the right direction.

The problem with an RBE is that it can only take care of one planet. When we go throughout the solar system you’ll see what is beyond.

Yes! Jason Hickel is a great scholar.

While large scale change is likely still some time off, don't wait for the changes either. There are already people living pretty close to post-capitalist lives. If you believe in this, you could be a force for moving things in that direction.

That's like my life purpose. At least a part of it. I have trouble figuring out which career/skills to develop so I can be most successful at that goal.

A society based more on values of The Self such as Love, Truth, Oneness, Happiness & Peace for all beings.

Gradually moving more & more towards that as more and more beings awaken to their true being.

Although, this doesn't necessarily mean Communism/ Socialism, and it unlikely to fit any of the ideologies we have today, but will probably be a hybrid of them all & will be a dynamic, ever evolving society, not a static, ideological left / right divisive one.

Here's to hoping anywaysxD

Capitalism will never die. This is one part of the system. Without it, there is nowhere.
