Life DOES have an objective meaning

64 posts in this topic

The objective meaning of life... drum roll please... REPRODUCTION. It is commonly believed that there is no objective meaning to life and you can do whatever you want with it. However, only the latter is true. There is one objective meaning but you can still live how you would like for the most part. You'll still have a very strong desire to reproduce. One may argue: how about gay people? The majority of people aren't gay and gay people still have a desire to adopt/raise a child. Being gay isn't a mental problem, it literally just boils down to preference. You can also be sure that reproduction is the objective meaning since all organisms do it. Not matter how different they are from each other. You can still live your life however you want though so this isn't a negative objective. You can save peoples lives throughout your life or worship and dance around a single rock for 8 hours a day. It's up to you. The down side to this is that a lot of people watch porn. This destroys your reward system and it's depressing how it's so commonly encouraged in society. The only time when I would advice watching it is if you're an adult and you have a boy/girl friend and you need to know how to have sex properly. But after you have a general understanding you shouldn't watch it at all. I don't have any advice for you on how to quit your porn addiction since I am ignorant to that subject. Probably watch a youtube video on it.

From that reasoning you could also say that the meaning of life is to eat, the meaning of life is to sleep, the meaning of life is to shit, to pee and eventually to die. So you're not really saying much

The meaning of life is life itself.

You see, the reason you want to be better, is the reason why you aren’t. Shall I put it like that?

We aren't better, because we want to be.

What about realities where there is no death, where everything is eternal ?

I guess as long as we are in the egoic mind we will crave for meaning, and if we manage to resolve the ego we experience there really doesn't need to be any meaning. It's fine that there isn't any meaning at all. But through embracing the meaninglessness and not judging it, just experiencing what is, it paradoxically becomes meaningful.

I get that you guys are saying "life doesn't need to have a meaning". But It can't just exist for the sake of it. If it didn't have a reason to exist then why does it exist?

Well, these are things that you have to do to survive in order to fill out that purpose. Even scientists agree that reproduction is the meaning of life.

Because it does.

Only your logical human and finite mind needs a reason for something to be.

Some scientists might agree with that idea. I think most scientists would prefer a statement like “Reproduction is necessary for the continuation of life”. In general, scientists prefer more objective terms than subjective- “necessary” is more objective than “meaning”.

Your persoectivec is relative to what you assign as “meaning”.

Adults are certainly more developed than teenagers in every area but this doesn't play a factor in one's ability to determine the topic of whether life has meaning or not. I post here and there to topics only I feel I can grasp. It can sometimes backfire against an adult to be super developed if they had bad habits when they were younger. Which is why porn is a big problem and should be banned imo.

That seems kind of arbitrary to me. You could just as well argue that physical reproduction is only done to enable mental reproduction of ideas. And the real meaning of life is to have your set of values and ideas persist and reproduce.

Well, technically we need reproduction to survive as well, at least as a species.. without reproduction no human life. This a biological urge for survival as well. I deeply struggled with those existential questions as well.. but I believe there really is no answer to "why". You can assign meaning to your life and you totally should, from the small picture and your direct experience there is meaning then. But from the big picture and the zoomed out view there is no meaning. If you stop asking "why" and just emerge in your direct experience, you will find meaning within the meaninglessness.

The universe is a mechanism that creates and destroys. Not saying that is a bad thing but that's what it does. Everything you have ever seen has been created but it will also be completely gone one day. So reproduction is necessary since, in order for something to go on forever, it must be created over and over again. Non-living things created life from the start in my opinion. And they created it in a way to fight against this universal rule of creation and destruction. Just like how fire burns a paper to ash it is very possible for the non-living to create the "living". So if life exists then it's objective meaning MUST be to reproduce since it will just die if it doesn't.

Edit" (just to add something) Everything the universe creates gets created over and over again. Stars, planets, life, etc. The universe creates nothing that can't be created over and over again because then it would have no reason to create it in the first place. Perhaps the universe is even alive but I highly doubt that.

Necessary and meaning are generally used differently.

Necessary is a more objective term than meaning. You are *adding* something extra with the term meaning.

For example: Electricity is necessary for a movie to continue playing. Is electricity the meaning of the movie?

@Roman Edouard 1. So the destruction is as necessary as the creation? Because another conclusion from your statements are: For something to go on forever it must be destroyed over and over again.

2. That doesn;t answer why physical reproduction has to be the most fundamental meaning. All you said could be completely true and I could just add that this entire dynamic just serves in order for mental reproduction to take place.
