Point Out My Bias

Yes. This is true. I have been struggling to eliminate this but it runs counter to my personality. I have a very non-conformist personality. But still, I need to work on that because sometimes it leads to falseness.

To be honest, I think this kind of bias can often be quite beneficial. As Osho famously said, "the people are retarded." But the reality is that people are only retarded most of the time. Sometimes things are popular or trendy for good reason, and if you instinctively dismiss anything simply because it's conformist, you're inevitably going to misjudge things some of the time.

I notice this pattern a lot because my dad has it to the nth degree, and I've seen both the benefits and drawbacks firsthand. Much of the success he's had in life can be attributed to his non-conformist outlook, but so can many of the problems he's encountered. It's very much a double-edged sword.

Another (slightly random) example I've noticed is among frequent travellers and backpackers. You'll meet people who insist you should avoid anywhere that's "too touristy", and perhaps 80% of the time they have a point. But some places are popular precisely because they're incredible, and dismissing them outright means missing out on some genuinely amazing experiences.

The irony is that this attitude is itself incredibly conformist within the backpacking community. In trying so hard to avoid following the crowd, you end up blindly following a different one.

Good point

Bias against sports.

I have seen you criticise watching sports as aping in the past. But sports channel a lot of darker impulses in a more civilised manner

I love your perspective on this and it's very insightful. One counter point I would add is that you might not care about politics, politics cares about you. In a sense it's our duty as citizens of a democracy to be informed and involved with politics as much as possible and the more the better.

I find this line of thought fascinating. Because i agree. It feels like it is the right thing to believe in. But for most people especially in this community it's like mental masturbation.

If this was a serious political community, then i would like to see post like, okay how do we implement this as a policy, how to get more eyes on it, how to become a mayor, president, etc. like i don't believe anyones real life is strongly related to polical landscape except the time you choose to vote. That's about it.

To have such a strong identity, biases and opinions just to pick a side once every 4 years seems overkill to me.

Imagine I had strong opinions on psychedelics and how people should use it, the insights etc, but i personally never take it and i just contemplate on it, just to pick which mushroom is the best once ever 4 years.....isn't that crazy.

I would definitely listent to leo who actually took the mushrooms and value his experience more.

But politics feels like if your opinions match my biases, then we good, else let's argue debate etc. if feel the same way about sports too...

Again I'm not against having political opinions, feels important to many. I get it. But as a public figure I don't feel Leo needs to hold on to politics so tightly, since in most cases it's just mental masturbation. Most people are like "ah thats a great take. Okay let me go back to my work and meet those deadlines."

I think leo is more spritual teacher than a political figure. Its okay for a spritual figure to have political opinions. But like every opinion, it's just an opinion. Like what every other person has. It could be better opinion, worst opinion, but that's all it is. Let's not make it to be a bigger deal than that.

Absolutely. It is overkill. Partisanship has gotten way out of hand. We are too polarized. We need to scale it back.

Ya like sports have many positives too:  Especially burning energy, and as a distraction from much more insalubrious activities like gaming and pot. But I admit sports are also the epitome of group think where fat lazy people spend a fortune to watch millionaires tackle each other.

oh, that’s a tough one. A bias toward the truth JK.

A bias toward psychedelics. Just because they worked perfectly for you, it doesn’t mean they work for everyone.

I wouldn’t necessarily call this a "bias," but you do tend to use generalizing rhetoric when it comes to women. Which could get you into trouble. When describing aspects of the female mind, it would be better to avoid the short, sharp remarks you’re in the habit of making. Especially these days, when many men are actually more emotional and easily offended than women.

You've never really thought about religion seriously and without a bias.

You were never open to it in your life even after finding out about spirituality and enlightenment.

You continued to ridicule it and ridicule religious people without ever wondering what is there that these people are like this?

Why majority of the world are religious people?

Why do they believe these things?

How did their intellect accept these things?

Is there actually something that I'm missing and these people are not actually stupid?

I know because I wasn't open to it either even after finding out about spirituality and enlightenment.

But after giving it a more serious thought and opening myself to it I found out I was just biased against it all my life.

I don't know if this counts as a bias but you don't emphasize enough the impact of surrounding yourself with the right kind of people. Not everyone is built for the solo mode and I'm learning more and more how much I need people in my life, despite my heavy heavy introversion.

Yes. This too. Even Leo who says he can live alone, is still spending thousands of hours here talking with you guys.

In my case, and most probably Leo's case, the need for a female partner who understands me and appreciates me. I just cannot. I need it. And if you are not asexual or some similar special genetics (which I think you don't) then you need a woman. Yes, women are Maya. But our biology screams for them. Straight men with normal genetics need women, prove me wrong. I don't care how enlightened you are. Many enlightened monks end up sexually frustrated and lonely.

This is part of why Leo encourages pickup so much
