This forum helped me escape from a cult

20 posts in this topic

About three years ago, I found some courses on Facebook and signed up for one. The organisation was Scientology.

They called me and asked about my problems and which areas of my life I wanted to improve. I thought, “Oh, this is a self-help group, kind of like Leo’s content!” I was genuinely excited to have discovered them.

For about two months, I attended their courses. The funny thing is that I actually enjoyed being there. I even considered buying their $2,000 course, which would have taken me much deeper into Scientology.

Fortunately, I came across a post on this forum and also watched Leo’s video about cults. That helped me recognise what I was getting involved in, and I managed to get out.

Looking back, I spent only two months there, so now it’s more of a funny story than a painful experience. But things could have turned out very differently if I had continued.

So, thanks to this forum.

Many years ago I had two roommates who were scientologists.  They were trying to get me into it but I was trying to show them that the stuff they were learning wasn’t anything special.  They were deep in the organization and something happened and they both suddenly realized it was a cult and got out.  They then shortly thereafter disappeared so they couldn’t be tracked by the church.  The church actually sent detectives to my door that I had to deal with.  But the interesting thing is even after all of that, my  one roommate told me that the scientology auditing actually helped him and was real.  There are ex-scientologists who still audit each other outside the church.

So you never heared of scientology before? I am really curious how could this even happen. You have internet access, why didn't you came to the Idea to google them just for a second. You instantly would read they are a cult everywhere on the internet.

You underestimate what the mind can block out when you're emotionally invested, it's a big blind spot.

You can read actualized is a cult on the internet too, does that make it one? Or is it possible that things aren't so obvious when you're involved in something?

Scientology and cults in general are designed to love-bomb and ease new recruits into to. They boil people alive slowly like frogs. Their early trainings are designed to have wide mainstream appeal. They are designed to be useful and offer genuine self-help value. Scientology courses can feel genuinely good at the start. It is a devious trap.

Cults usually don't seem harmful until you get deep into them. It is a classic sort of marketing funnel.

Yep. It's almost impossible to recognise love bombing if you've never experienced it before.

You can find many YouTube videos documenting the evils of Scientology. Interviews with ex-members.
