What Are You Reading Right Now? [Book Recommendations & Insights]

[LordFall]

Currently reading Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene. I really like him as an author and I feel like he gets wiser and deeper with the wisdom he shares with each book. I've read 48 Laws of Power and Mastery by him which were really good but this is by far a better book.

Best insight I've gotten so far in the book is that mastering your emotions is gonna be highly relevant to reaching most big goals. Robert writes about many known people in history who both had great emotional control and it helped them or a terrible grasp on their arrogance or need for approval and it sabotaged them.

Feel free to share what you're reading right now, what you're getting out of it, and whether it's worth checking out.

@LordFall Really love Robert Greene! Poor guy. My compassion for his health struggles.

Half way through "Steve Jobs" by Walter Isaacson - highly recommend this. Especially for you, I think based on my collected knowledge (of you) across many forum posts and dialogues, you would enjoy this immensely!

Finished "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer - an unexpected surprise! This took me on a ride and I haven't been gripped by a story for a while. Based on a true story - disaster while scaling Mt Everest.

On my 3rd read.

insight : Everything you have done has led to perfection.

You have always been an immortal being, so relax knowing there is no end.

Any worry you are going through has never existed until you wake up, so sleep while you are alive and live in your dream. Refuse anything besides nurturing the garden of your mind with perfection.

You can fight me on this and that is still perfection.

Seems like you're starting to know me! I did read it already like 10 years ago and I enjoyed it a lot. I enjoyed reading how his life unfolded and how Apple became the giant it is today. The part on him doing consciousness work, taking psychedelics and going to India to explore spirituality was particularly interesting. Apple has deeper roots than most technology companies.

I think he's a good business inspiration for people on the forum. A dude that became a billionaire not by being a greedy capitalist but through being obsessed with building great products for humanity.

That's cool, I should read more enlightenment and non-duality books. It's a topic of life that still scares me so I think I subconsciously avoid looking into it too much.

It's starting to be an area of research that calls to me more and more though, often when I read technical stuff it feels a bit shallow and like I'm bypassing deeper knowledge.

@LordFall Definitely - I particularly enjoy how Jobs was an amalgamation of tech solutions & consciousness work with a priority on aesthetics. The book was great diving back into his history, how he was raised and what he was exposed to that made him into such a great entrepreneur and strong visionary (even if he was quite catalytic).

I still remember when the iPod was first released. About 6 weeks after 9/11. The two events are big in my memory.

Reading book is an useless outdated tech, abstract schizophrenic concepts repackaged that barely touch reality.

This book makes you uncomfortable in a way I can't describe.

You just want to become a Wizard.

I agree. Any technology older than three and a half days is absolutely useless and should be exterminated at a federal level.

Even trying to understand and measure a word against reality is near impossible, so a bunch of it ?!

Few people can articulate human nature better than Shakespeare.

I like to try and read literature because my current discipline (cyber) is very technical, and non-human oriented. So, I want to keep in touch with my humanity through literature. Jane Eyre has been enjoyable so far, and much more easy to engage with than previous literature I've been going through.

Mindset I've been meaning to get through for a while. So far, it seems pretty aligned with general self-help advice, but still early, so maybe it will bring me some unique insights.

@Ulax Respect with Jayne Eyre - I have read most of the Bronte sisters works. Dense language.

Heavy english lit - but amazing for vocabulary expansion!

That's cool you've read most of their works.

My mind.

Robert Greene appeals to lower levels of consciousness, so if someone is reading them, I would only be doing so scientifically.

I read a lot of research papers, geopolitics, science news (inclusive of criticising the lack thereof in so called science) and drawing cultural patterns through social media and listening to crazy people; and then we have the textbooks of course. Books these days are often so out of touch with broader reality and what actually happens that you have to rely on your own diligence concerning.

Robert Greene for example, doesn't discriminate between cultural trends and selfhood, personality inclinations and the environments that support them versus broad generalisations based on biased sampling, nor the character of a culture and the impacts this has in areas pertinent to his books versus the character of a person. Because of this as well, his evolutionary perspectives are usurped by preliminary biases warped by personal experience he hasn't fully brought context to. Robert Greene isn't wrong, fully, that is, however I made a point in the recent red pill thread that not being wrong isn't where the danger lays, its in being partially right and wrong, then forgetting the mess in between that resolves the lack of clarity and substitutes nuanced perspectives for broad generalisations that can turn peoples brains into gu without them realising.

I enjoy picking a book at random when I'm catching a flight to read on the plane. Usually always finished by the end of flight. Modern books, even those more on the 'gotta look intellectual' side of things are pretty easy quick reads.

The mind is as lost as it relies on the outside world for its sense of meaning, much more so when it tries to derive its values from the outside world. And the world itself is beyond salvaging more pessimistic persons might say if a best seller is something like the 48 laws of power.

I also write a lot.

One solid read that comes to mind: 127 hours.

~~ Gotta get the marketing right aye ~~

Robert Greene got a stroke while promoting his book Law of Human nature. Very unfortunate for him.

Subsequently, he wrote Law of the Sublime. I am more interested in this book but unable to find a copy in library.

From what I gather the Law of the Sublime is more spiritually themed. I am interested to hear his perspectives on the matter.
