Flock Cameras: For or Against?

21 posts in this topic

I go back and forth on this. I don’t feel like I have a strong opinion either way. Flock has solved a lot of crimes that would have been harder to solve without it. But Flock has also been misused and there is some concern over how much power should we give the government over the individual.

There is no expectation of privacy in public. People can film you without your permission and there are already cameras at stoplights and speed cameras.

Flock isn’t just a camera, it is linked to AI and I’m not sure the extent of how much one’s personal information will be involved. We have the 2nd amendment right to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. Democracy is fragile. Flock has the potential to give the government more power to exploit its citizens. Just a thought.

But if we are to ban Flock, then the logic follows that stoplight and speed cameras should be outlawed. Filming in public is a first amendment right, but maybe we need to question this?

I think most people are overreacting to Flock even though their concerns are valid. I’m still not sure where I stand, but I may be leaning towards pro Flock.

What do you think about Flock?

George Orwell first talked an all -seeing surveillance state called "Big Brother" in 1949.

Will it someday come to that? I don't know.  But I am glad they are putting cameras on school buses to catch people that ignore the flashing stop lights when children are crossing the road.

Some of those cameras have use like in certain buildings. But speed cameras are ridiculous. We gotta draw the line somewhere.

I don’t think we should give the government that much control. Flock is already thinking of expanding to drones.

We should be able to vote and consent to this. What is stopping the government from putting cameras in our houses? Our phones are already being tapped into.

To truly love something is to grant that thing freedom. It is to hold it in an open palm of your hand without clenching over it.

Not just the citizens, but their enemies, and the whole of society.

My biggest concern is it would lead to an enormous concentration of wealth and power.

Check this shit out:

It's hard to fathom all the ways they could use it to acquire more resources and power.

Imagine having 24/7 feeds monitoring hundreds of thousands of businesses.

What if this is just fascination + identity + seriousness being inflated into universal importance?

Imagine if Palantir got it's filthy hands on this shit in some sort of horrific merge.

Flock:        reality = data

Palantir:   data = intelligence

Some fucking Orwellian shit. Human misuse as well.

It is far easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled.

I wish progressives would extend this realization to nationalized healthcare and elections(eliminating electoral college)

Progressives are aware of the concerns regarding nationalized healthcare system. It's just that the AI based survailance thing is arguably a much bigger, realistic concern and threat to your liberty right now. Whearas the risks with nationalized healthcare is still manageable.

It looks like the incentive structure for mass surveillance is strong enough that it is probably going to continue to happen whether we like it or not. My concern is that mass surveillance will not be applied equally to the rich and powerful and this exploit of the justice system continues and is exacerbated by this. Hunting down criminals starts to feel performative rather than having substantial justice.

These things should actually make our current corrupt two-tiered system more just. Although, I'm not a proponent because I think they're a waste of resources.

I'm actually not concerned about it. I think you guys are a little neurotic about massive governments effectively conspiring against you. It would require a sophisticated, well organized criminal government structure to weaponize these things against innocent citizens.

Palantir, anyone afraid of Palantir should research the system. Palantir tags every query and leaves a chain tracing back the researchers actions, you can see if someone is weaponizing the justice system, which is illegal on the part of the investigator.

The Watcher is documented under Palantir, they never were before.

Think of before any documentation, the sheriff could get away with most anything. Now we have civillian video and other things that can more accurately determine the actual criminal and exclude others. They dont need this to create anymore of a two-tiered system. It could be used for weaponizing justice, but the Palantir system has a check in place for that, and if you have a corrupt government to begin with that's the actual problem. If trump could get people to hack palantir; he can get people to create ai video evidence against you or whatever else, he can have nsa track everything about you.

It does not seem necessary for me though.

One more thing...

It can stop mass shootings 🤷

If the government has access to spy on us, then we should have access to spy on the government.

My guess is you don't even know what their reasoning is to begin with. À la; hubris.
