I will look up words I don't know and I did that a lot when I was younger.  But I try to speak in a common tongue as much as possible because my aim is communication with everyone.  I'm not talking about technical terms in a field, those need to be learned.  I'm talking about using big words when a more ordinary word would suffice.

Yeah i would rather plant the better word in when needed. It is nice to see someone's face when you use a word they don't understand.   And you have to explain what it means.  It's not to show off I think its natural to grow your vocabulary and you should be able to get more advanced with your language.

I was never really into this, but I can respect people who love words and wordplay.

I also sift through extensive lists of synonyms, antonyms, euphemisms and dysphemisms. 

So, I hear a word I do not know - I look up the current definition, it's etymology, pronunciation. Then synonyms and antonyms of it. Then I formulate a sentence using the word - then I work a euphemism / dsyphemism for it (if it is possible).

I probably remember words easily because this method. 

Usually verbally dictate into chatGPT for a pointer - then find a proper source.

Lots of English literature when young was a huge formative drive for this
