13-Year-Olds Going to Prison in Sweden?

17 posts in this topic

So from August, 13-year-olds could potentially end up in prison for serious crimes.

Just think about that for a second.

A few years ago, this would’ve sounded like dystopian fiction. Now it’s becoming reality.

Whether you support it or not, the fact that Sweden is even considering this says a lot about where society is heading.

Swedish prison is probably nicer than how most Americans live :D

They'll make sure it's diverse, equal and inclusive. In Sweden, they make sure prison cells are occupied by all genders equally

Yeah, I don't know what it's like these days, but I remember years ago watching a documentary about their prison system, they literally showed two dudes living in an apartment complex lol.

That’s the most convincing argument for crime I’ve heard all week.

Well 13 year old can do serious crime and can be a danger to society. I am not sure how time in jail affects people, but a quality jail in sweden might be very different then other jails in other countries. It might even offer opportunites. Social and psychological work can be easier when someone is in custody. I saw how in scandanevian countries jailed people get a quality education and can get a good job when they leave jail.

Of course cutting someone off from their family and normal social life is a drastic thing, but they will only put serious cases in jails I am sure.

I think its more about that it can be hard to get employed in the future if this is in their resume, so maybe there can be strategies to hide that. I think that would be fair.

The real punishment is having to assemble your own cell.

When prison starts sounding like a reasonable educational program for 13-year-olds, something has gone very wrong somewhere.

Sweden didn't put under 18s in prison till now due to the rising gang violence. It's actually normal I think across most of the world to imprison kids for serious crime.

Bad immigration policy tends to test liberal utopian dreams.

Maybe. I just find it fascinating how every utopia eventually ends up needing more prisons.

If you know anything about child soldiers then you know that they can be monsters. Easily brainwashed and work zealously for cheap. They get paid in food an approval and are expendable. It makes sense to exploit children to do your dirty work if you are resource starved which is probably the case for these gangs.

But I’ve never believed that a cage can heal what was broken in the soul. If we’re dealing with monsters, we should probably ask what created them in the first place. You don’t heal monsters with prison. You heal them with love.

@Monster Energy this can be true - but there are some individuals who have something very, very wrong. Not many. But some. Their brains and biology is different.

Overall I think rehabilitation and help is what is needed, not leaving people to rot in prison. Imprisoning people for being addicts is wrong to me.

It is far easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled.

I’m not even sure everyone can be saved from their immoral actions. What makes me sad is how many people, at least where I live, seem to believe in punishment more than love.

The moment you talk about compassion or rehabilitation, people assume you’re disrespecting the victim!

Serious crime deserve serious consequences. 13-18 yo are old enough to know what they are doing is wrong.

Also, they get help inside prison and are removed from the criminal environment that bred them. It's not like Turkish prison.

my guess its because of the massive immigration issues in sweden, gangs are using minors to commit serious crimes because they cant go to jail
