My plan to make money as a rapper.

Guys i have a plan to make a living from rap : -Combining getting hired for gigs and projects as a rapper through freelance work. I will build a portfolio, or a resume, to get hired. -Building a small community on social media, of fans, who are willing to donate on patreon for support and listening to my music relases in advance, or to share exclusive music there.

The logic behind my plan is that it's not logical to think that to make money as a rapper you need to blow up and make millions, or you make nothing. There must be some way in between to practice making money and start earning it, first as a part time income, then a full time income, then if you blow up you make millions. This binary black and white thinking or you're either drake or a nobody isn't logical.

Too risky without massive talent in making music. And even then, still too risky. Even with massive skill, without capital, you’d need a lot of luck with exposure.

Guy lives in Vietnam on very little money to focus on music and YouTube full time

You can make $1000 pm online and live like a king in Asia, Africa, South America.

Is not risky, it just takes a lot of work. You can make a living, and thriving starts from there.

Is not risky because he's not the only crazy one trying rap for the first time. It is a sub culture well established and there is a lot of economy around it. But it takes hours upon hours of music production and it is harsh.

Guys don`t stop this ambitious guy from doing what he want. He hoped for some support, not some naysayers. Of course nothing is guaranteed. But anyway everyone should believe that they can achieve some degree of success.

 

To the OP I can say next: you actually don`t need to be a solely rapper to make lots of money. Even today best athletes don`t make 80% of their income from only sports. Nowadays ronaldos and mcgreggors of the world are business man, who monetize their athletic careers. Think about that.

It's risky as hell bro. Biggest risk is lost time you can't get back and wasted effort on acquiring skills you can't easily market. Thousands of hours invested in something that does nothing to pay the bills. This is the most common outcome.

Proper support would be to account for risk.

The hardest thing for artists is they have to spend years or decades making bets that their efforts will eventually pay off, and for the vast majority, they never do. That's just the reality. I'm not saying it's unlikely, reality is.

Also, energy turns to shit when you don’t get reality feedback relatively quickly and often. This is a huge psychological cost that is never acknowledged. Can you really just push through for 5 years without reality feedback that what you're doing is working? 

You can, but the longer the feedback loop, the stronger your financial and psychological grounding needs to be.

Ignore this at your own peril.

My point assumes you care about not wasting time. If you don't care about wasted time, then maybe the risk drops significantly.

Why do you think is wasted time if that's what you want to be doing? 

If you invested a lot into something and does not pays the bills either you're lying yourself by saying this is your thing or you're just not good enough.

Also if you really prepare yourself, like really really, risk drops significantly. I think you are showing your own insecurities here.

I am not saying ignore all the risks.
