So, coins, coinage are conformity as well,  we all need to agree that coins have any value in order to it be valuable. There is a long History of how coinage came to be and is conected with slavery,Debt,Sin and Military. Check the book Debt by David Graeber. There was tribes in America who used Shells as tokens, not exactly as we concept tokens but still using shells as simbolic valuable stuff.

I finally watched the video yesterday/today. It was great - thanks Leo. The endeavour to ask „where did I get that idea/thought?” is powerful. I’ll ask that more often, primarily in the areas of life I’m working on right now.

More conformity examples that came to mind:

  • How people dance
  • What music people listen to
  • But the biggest one: how people approach relationships in general. Sooo much fucking conformity. Which I’m currently realizing in myself of course, and wish to develop my own ideas of how I want my relationships to look like. Based on who I am, what I tolerate, etc.. I’ve been foolish there so far, buying the ideas that culture has given me.

Words can't describe You.

AAA video games. Both the consumption of them and the making of them.

Traditional Japanese martial arts very conformist. Meditating and bowing at a portrait of the founder in a neat row or having to speak certain phrases in Japanese like "osu" whenever you receive instructions or bowing when you enter the dojo is cringey. The whole enterprise of Japanese martial is more about "building character" in the Japanese image than functional martial arts in my opinion. It's why I bounced off traditional martial arts in favor of more "western" stuff like kickboxing. Even when it comes to swordplay, HEMA is much more practically functional than Kendo.

They tend to be semi-mystical, especially Aikido. In aikido you are trained to not resist your partner when they practice their moves, so you get stuff where someone a bit more experience can "throw" their partner over their shoulder like a rag, but it's more like a choreographed dance because the one being thrown is not only not resisting but actively moving with the motion. A lot of traditional martial arts, especially aikido, are glorified dance schools. Kata is literally memorizing a dance.

Actual martial arts require strength. At least half of martial arts is just being strong, which traditional martial tend to sidestep in favor of largely unrealistic technical minutia and philosophy. All the instructors I've had in kickboxing have all been taller and stronger than average and in their physical prime.
