How to Mix Humor and Truth?

14 posts in this topic

Following Leo`s work I wonder a lot: how can I practically and healthily be funny and at the same time truthful?

Joke is most of the time is based on a lie. Like humor around me is based mostly on falsehood, and I don`t like to lie. So how is it possible to be social, dating with a partner and still remain at least relatively truth-intact? Thanks.

Humor is often just telling the truth.

You know, in some sense it is, but when I read how Leo flirted with girls, it`s mostly just lies.

1. Try to be truthful.

2. Don't try to be humorous, learn to just be. Socializing is just about being together. That's the truth about socializing. Humor falls out if it naturally at some points. But it's ok to just socialize and not be humorous. Humor is a happy surprise. Forcing humor can be one of the least humorous things you can do.

People also like when you say insightful things and being deep. But that doesn't always happen either, and forcing that might make you come off like a jackass. Forcing what isn't there, that's a general trap. Forcing what isn't there, is to not be truthful.

A lot of the best jokes actually reveal truths we are too scared, sad, ashamed of, guilty of etc to admit to ourselves. Humour can be a great way of expressing truths that are very funny. Jokes can reveal truths we couldn’t have seen otherwise.

People like Louis CK, and Theo Von,  George Carlin, Dave Chapelle make their jokes expressing truths.

Comedy is actually a really powerful art I think.

There is a saying in Russian: "Every joke has a bit of a joke to it", pointing out how when people joke about something, they are often uncovering their deepest believes, insecurities, emotions, etc.

It's a word play on an even older saying "every joke has a bit of a truth to it".

Once you become conscious that life is a dream, you can laugh at people for taking themselves so damn seriously, you’ll also laugh at yourself

The easiest way to be funny is to poke fun at the things we all take for granted as "true". In other words, observational humor.

I think that humor provoke inner subpersonalities of your companion to reveal.

Sometimes it helps to switch attention, to provoke strong eruption deep feelings.
