Is it beneficial to pray?

I personally feel the basic methods are massively underrated in this community cuz we kinda operate on the assumption that your some badass who can just cut all other methods and go for the enlightenment jugular. In reality this isint usually sustainable.

Loving others, talking with god (which could fall into the category of prayer loosely), meditation, awakening theory...will these get you enlightened? Hell no. But not having them as a foundation? You'll have a rocket with no launch pad or a poorly calibrated launch pad. 👎🏽

These are great but it's a trap to dogmaticly believe them or just parrot them.

I have never done it. I have never asked God for anything except to not be grounded when I was a kid. I start to ask God for things and see if it works.

When I was a kid I once asked God and Mother Mary and all the saints to stop a bully from scool from beating me. I thought he was planning to.  It worked. He never showed up and I left the scool grounds safe. But got into a skiing accident right after. Broke my skis and injured my leg.

I'll give you an extract from Sri Anandamayi Ma on Prayer:

 

Question: Why should one pray to God at all? God in any case does all that is necessary. 

 

Mataji: Yes, this is also true on one level. But prayer is good, for to pray means turning one's thoughts to God. 

 

There are various kinds of prayer. 

At first, man prays for material things like wealth, health, family, position, etc. On that level, if he did not pray for these or similar boons, he would not remember God at all.

To be reminded of God, no matter from what motive, is beneficial. 

 

Then there is a stage, especially in the line of Bhakti (the path of Love), when prayer spontaneously flows from one's heart. One yearns and pines for God and cannot help praying:

"I cannot bear to be without Thee, reveal Thyself! Oh Infinite one! When will Thou bless me with Thy Awakening?" 

It is like a fever that cannot be allayed by anything but union with God. 

 

The first type of prayer is of the ego; the second is still of the ego, but of the ego that is about to disintegrate; when its prayer is fulfilled, there will be no other prayer. 

 

There is another state when one prays: 

"Do what Thou wilt with me. I am a tool in Thy hand, only vouchsafe me the strength to endure whatever Thou mayst require of me. I am your slave. I am an instrument in your hands."

 

There is a further state when one does not pray at all. 

One feels: "God does all that is necessary, so, for what am I to pray?" 

Established in the firm realization and experience that God provides for all the needs of its creatures, that verily God lives through each one of us and everything is at its loving mercy, then one becomes free from needless worry and remains absorbed in deep samadhi.

To me praying is desperation when all else fails. It’s basically like “ah hell why not” but no I don’t think prayer does anything but if it makes you feel better go for it!

What do you think about prayer; not doing it for something but rather for being alive and being extremely grateful of existence?

Most people use prayer as a means to an end, to escape suffering or to benefit themselves or others. Also people pray because that's how they grew up with an idea of what prayer is and how to do it and what it means. 

Prayer is sacred. It's not about getting something or getting away from something, that's survival. Prayer is a very beautiful thing but it gets abused and corrupted by the ego for the means of preserving a false self
