We should revisit what we take consciousness to be - beyond any cosmology one might have conjured up. It's likely that you mean awareness.

 Ram Dass followed the advice of his guru and got away from psychedelics and instead made service to the community his sadhana. He spent his later years sitting with terminally ill people that were in hospice care.

Your baker could have and awakening last year on dmt and you wouldnt know.

You dont transform into an Osho-like character.

By awakening, you probably mean some kind of experience.

This is also true of meditative awakenings. You can do an intense meditation retreat, have an enlightenment event, and when you come back home nothing has really changed and no one will ever know.
