Haiti is a failed state

Great documentary showing what life is like in a lawless country. Spoiler alert, utter shit. Puts my cushy life into perspective. If you live in a first world country you don't have problems, you have challenges (unless you have a serious mental illness or disability or something).

It's like Cyberpunk, but just the crime.

Haiti successfully gained independence from French colonial rule and exploitation in 1804.

What wrecked Haiti was the huge debts the French demanded from them later on in return for diplomatic recognition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haitian_independence_debt

Quote

The Haitian independence debt involves an 1825 agreement between Haiti and France that included France demanding an indemnity of 150 million francs in five annual payments of 30 million to be paid by Haiti in claims over property including Haitian slaves that was lost through the Haitian Revolution in return for diplomatic recognition.

Haiti was forced to take a loan for the first 30 million, and in 1838 France agreed to reduce the remaining debt to 60 million to be paid over 30 years, with the final payment paid in 1883. However, The New York Times estimates that because of other loans taken to pay off this loan, the final payment to debtors was actually in 1947.

Obviously this meant that will be no investment in infrastructure related to government institutions necessary for a stable society and progress.

An interesting part  of all this is that the Americans, for all their talk of freedom and democracy, hypocritically engaged in a policy of diplomatic isolation of neighboring  Haiti, as there were fears that the successful Haitian independence movement might bring about a similar independence movement among the black slaves in the US.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/External_debt_of_Haiti

Quote

Haiti was the richest and most productive European colony in the world going into the 1800s. Haiti's legacy of debt began shortly after a widespread slave revolt against the French, with Haitians gaining their independence from France in 1804. President of the United States Thomas Jefferson – fearing that slaves gaining their independence would spread to the United States – stopped sending aid that began under his predecessor John Adams and pursued international isolation of Haiti during his tenure.

France had also pursued a policy that prevented Haiti from participating in trade in the Atlantic. This isolation on the international stage made Haiti desperate for economic relief.

They have a literal combat zone where the police will shoot anyone on sight, where they regularly get into gunfights with gang members.

@Ajay0 You forget to precise that the debt was primarily motivated by the fact that the "Haitian Revolution" was led by a crazed black supremacist who instructed his loyalists to exterminate all white French people, including children, or to rape and forcefully marry women.

Interesting indeed. He sounds a lot like Putin.  O.o

If I may ask, did the white French treat the blacks as their equals and treated black women and children with dignity and respect they deserve, as opposed to the black supremacists .

Of course these people were exploited, but Dessaline committed ethnic cleansing.

In fact, he actually became dictator and "emperor" of Haiti, and favored his friends in obtaining properties from former colonists.

Haïti, mon pays
Wounded mother I'll never see
Ma famille set me free
Throw my ashes into the sea

Mes cousins jamais nés
Hantent les nuits de Duvalier
Rien n'arrête nos esprits
Guns can't kill, soldiers can't see

In the forest we are hiding
Unmarked graves where flowers grow
Hear the soldiers angry yelling
In the river we will go

Tous les morts-nés forment une armée
Soon we will reclaim the earth
All the tears and all the bodies
Bring about our second birth

Haïti, never free
N'aie pas peur de sonner l'alarme
Tes enfants sont partis
In those days their blood was still warm

Two quotes come to mind

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter.

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.

You don't want to cooperate with a guy who does ethnic cleansing.

Would you consider Haiti to be an example of libertarianism or anarchism?
