Zelensky on coke

Not sure if this deserves a thread of its own but it's really funny nonetheless.

He is in a very stressful position. He has difficultly sleeping. He might have a cold or jet-lag and taking something to help him with that. Doesn't mean it is coke. Irresponsible to call it coke.

Obviously he is not snorting coke in the middle of a live interview.

Jimmy Dore is an epistemic pervert with an agenda.

Zelensky has done a great job for his people.

I love Zelenskey, except for his policy about men not being able to leave the country. That is unforgivable

Jimmy is cringe, making fun of the way Zelensky pronounces the word 'voting', and then says he sounds high. He sounds totally sober, just tired.

Leo, the “he’s just stressed / jet-lagged / has a cold” explanation is the standard damage-control line. It doesn’t address the pattern that multiple people around him (including former staff) have described for years: sudden shifts in demeanor after short bathroom breaks, especially before important appearances. That observation isn’t unique to Jimmy Dore.

More importantly, the real issue isn’t whether he did coke in that moment. The real issue is the actual record of what this war has done to Ukraine under his leadership.

Ukraine went into this war already in a severe demographic crisis. Since 2022 the population has dropped from roughly 40+ million to around 30 million through deaths, injuries, emigration, and collapsed birth rates. Hundreds of thousands of young men are dead or maimed. An entire generation that would have been needed to rebuild the country is being consumed. A country does not have a future without its young people. “Fighting for freedom and democracy” becomes an empty slogan when the demographic base required to live that freedom is being destroyed.

Zelensky was a professional actor and comedian before becoming president. That skill set is useful for selling a narrative. It does not automatically make someone a competent wartime leader looking out for the long-term survival of his people. Ukraine was already one of the more corrupt countries in Europe before the war, and large parts of the war economy have only intensified those problems.

Wars are not primarily “country versus country.” They are fought with the bodies and futures of ordinary people. The population pays the price in blood, trauma, and collapse while external actors (arms industries, financial interests, geopolitical strategies) extract advantage. From that perspective, continuing a war that cannot restore the pre-2022 borders and is steadily hollowing out the country is not “doing a great job for his people.” It is serving other interests while the Ukrainian people carry the cost.

Many Ukrainians themselves are exhausted and want an end to the fighting. Pretending that any criticism of the current course is just propaganda or bad faith doesn’t change the demographic and human reality on the ground.

There would be no Ukraine left under worse leadership.

You are not appreciating the difficulty of his position and situation.

Criticizing Zelensky is downright shameful.

@Leo Gura can you outline the standards you would use to determine when it is okay to criticize somebody versus when it is shameful?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I just want to know how the pattern would hold up under different scenarios.

Am I going about this wrong by expecting there to be consistent standards in how one relates to reality? Is reality fundamentally inconsistent in some domains such that "which standards" would be the wrong question?

@Leo Gura

Leo, calling criticism “shameful” is not an argument. It’s a way to shut down the discussion when the actual results are hard to defend.

Ukraine has already lost a huge part of its population — through deaths, injuries, and mass emigration. The young generation that would have been needed to rebuild the country is being consumed. A nation does not survive by sacrificing the people who would have lived its future. That is the core point you keep avoiding.

The analogy is simple: if you have to choose between losing territory or losing most of the next generation, a responsible leader prioritizes the living population. Continuing a war that cannot restore the pre-2022 borders while the demographic base collapses is not “saving Ukraine.” It is destroying what remains of it.

Zelensky had multiple opportunities for negotiated settlements early on. He chose the path of prolonged war under Western military and financial support. That made him useful to external interests — arms industries, geopolitical strategies, financial flows — while the Ukrainian people paid the price in blood and collapse. Calling that “the difficulty of his position” does not change the outcome.

There is less and less of a viable Ukraine left under this leadership, not more. Pointing that out is not shameful. Pretending the human and demographic cost is secondary to narratives of resistance is.

@Christoph Werner You don’t get to decide those things though. You don’t get to decide what’s best for them or what they do with their population, how they defend their country.

I have no such standards.

Shameless behavior does not require a counter-argument. Just shame.

Well, you could make any argument for anything so moot point. Also, Ukraine isn’t doing that… so bringing it that into the convo is a distortion.

It's funny because if you're responsible for milions of people's lives, at least be sober.
