New Tesla Roadster can fly

37 posts in this topic

I remember a time when everybody thought electric cars were a joke. So there will always be fools who naysay. But obviously this tech won’t replace normal cars. But just be an addition. That high pressure air is lethal for bystanders.

Tesla: timeline of misleading claims

* 2013 — Hyperloop: Promoted ultra-high-speed tube transport reaching 760 mph; no commercial passenger system materialised.

* 2016 — Solar Roof: Showcased as a near-term product before large-scale production was achievable.

* 2016 — Full Self-Driving: Claimed hardware would enable full autonomy, despite later hardware upgrades and continued reliance on driver supervision.

* 2017 — Roadster 2: Promised for 2020; repeatedly delayed for years.

* 2017 — Tesla Semi: Promised for 2019; deliveries began in 2022, with mass production delayed.

* 2017 onwards — Boring Company Loop: Promoted as high-speed, high-capacity transport; Las Vegas instead uses human-driven Teslas in narrow tunnels.

* 2019 — Cybertruck: Advertised at $39,900 with a 500-mile range; the original price and specifications did not materialise as promised.

* 2019 — Robotaxis: Musk predicted over one million robotaxis by 2020; the promised fleet never materialised.

* 2020 onwards — Full Self-Driving: Repeated predictions of imminent unsupervised driving failed to materialise.

* October 2024 — Optimus robot: Human teleoperation or assistance was involved in many interactions, creating a misleading impression of autonomous capability.

* 2024 — Cybercab: Presented as a purpose-built autonomous taxi; the promise of scalable, driverless commercial operation remains unfulfilled.

Yet he's accomplished much more than any of his detractors combined lol.

I'm not an Elon fanboy by any means but he's accomplished quite a bit regardless.

Is he overhyped?

For sure...

There's nothing really groundbreaking or innovative about any of the companies he runs besides SpaceX.

To say he is this generations Thomas Edison is pretty hyperbolic and ridiculous.

But from an engineering and operations perspective he's basically elite.

It's the same dilemma as Kanye or Michael Jackson, Genius in one area, but doing total damage in another.
Where is the line? DOGE recked a lot of lives, should Musk be excused because he builds "cool" tech?

Tier 1 can't handle this dilemma, and picks one side or another.

I think the definition of cool is different from person to person. The stuff in the presentation is totally pointless therefor uncool for me. If it would solve a real world problem it would be cool.
The SD Orange "just doing it because you can", does not fly for me, does not make it cool.

Deep down he is a geek who just likes cool new tech.

He is living out his geek tech fantasies like a James Bond villian.

Exactly and every James Bond villain wants to rule the world, with Musk it's through tech.

"Thruster-assisted flight in consumer cars can’t be made safe enough, because the problem isn’t whether a thruster can be made reliable, it’s what happens at scale when one inevitably cuts out. No propulsion system is 100% reliable, and across millions of hops, even rare failures become a daily event. Unlike a helicopter, a cold-gas car can’t glide or autorotate. When thrust stops, it simply drops. A short drop is only survivable if three things all hold: the car stays low, the seat is built to absorb a vertical impact, and the car lands level. Consumer use undermines all three. People will fly higher than they should, skip maintenance, run low on gas, overload the car, and take drops mid-maneuver when the car is tilted. So even if the engineering can make a single hop safe, you can’t make millions of people flying their own cars safe."

What if this is just fascination + identity + seriousness being inflated into universal importance?

I don't get it. Does this thing have gas for 10 seconds of flying? What is the point?

November 2012: Musk emailed Epstein asking, "What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?" and discussed a potential holiday trip.

December 2012 (Christmas): Musk wrote that he was working hard and wanted to "hit the party scene in St Barts or elsewhere and let loose." Epstein replied that the ratio on his private island (Little St. James) might make Musk's then-wife, Talulah Riley, uncomfortable, though logistics ultimately prevented the visit.

February 2013: Their assistants coordinated a potential lunch at SpaceX offices near Los Angeles. A later email from Epstein on February 26 thanked Musk for a "tour" of SpaceX, which Musk has previously and publicly denied.

December 2013: Musk wrote again asking if there was a good time to visit the BVI/St. Barts area over the holidays, to which Epstein offered to send a helicopter, though that trip was also canceled. [1, 2, 3]

Responses and Denials

Elon Musk: Musk has maintained that he never visited Epstein's island and turned down his invitations, posting on X that the emails could be misinterpreted or that the statements were being sensationalized.

It’s amazing that people still take musk seriously after that

Pretty sure he directs the design department. He tells them what he wants and approves or vetoes their designs.

Pretty typical for a creative director role.

Who wants a car that you can't drive manually?

No one wants that.
