It's largely about an empire trying to regain it's glory. Putin has tremendous power over Russia and has dismantled all the checks and opposing forces in the country over the years. Putin believes he needs to reestablish Russia as a force to be reckon with and take back land that was part of Russia during the Russian Empire. There are of course seeds of resentment over how the Soviet Union collapsed and lost the cold war to the USA, equally so fears of being invaded dating back to WWII. But the safety concerns are largely a sort of "cover" to justify the real reason which is Make Russia Great Again. Russia has nukes. Ukraine is a weak country and there was no reason for Europe to attack Russia again. They had been entangling their economies for a quarter century. Putin got a bunch of crazy ideas while he was quarantined during COVID. He bought his own hype thinking he could pull a Cuba on Ukraine in a couple days with a woefully small amount of soldiers and now here we are today. He basically started it and the momentum he created has made it so that he has to keep going forward. Nothing here comes from long term planning. Every choice he has made has just been to try and put out a fire here, a fire there. Hence why it's so sloppy and why he can't back out of it. And of course the majority Russians are super conformist and will back whatever Putin does. Russia had an opportunity to become a sort of quasi authoritarian market country with more power spread amongst oligarchs and middle class. With that would of come more protests, less conformity, more demands for freedom and speech and whatnot. I think Putin has grown to fear that as well and the war has also come with the benefit of stamping out any sort of political dissent. So got relief from all the protests during COVID as well. It's a perfect storm really. No on knows how it will end.
