Directed and written by Natasha Tori Maru

FUAAARK I don't have the chops for that.

Not sure how well construction management would translate to directing a movie.

But I can light a fire up someone's arse and get shit done. My whole job is keeping the ship sailing for building projects.

Perfect. Because half of directing is pretending you know what you’re doing while everyone else is panicking. If you can keep a ship from sinking, you’re already ahead of most people in Hollywood.

I think it's gonna be movie of the year, I'm hyped.

Paul Atreides sucks as a partner though, he couldn't even keep one concubine happy. I feel like it was a simple communication issue to solve.

I'm gonna try and watch Dune Prophecy before part 3 comes out, I think the Bene Gesserit are so cool I'm curious to see how they show their origin story.

Have you read the books?

There's much more than just communication at issue. Pauls destiny comes between them in a HUGE way. Chani also has trouble emotionally with Pauls political marriage to Irulun (which is just for political legitimacy). Sometimes communication cannot reconcile emotional hurt - the books go into this a lot. Also there is some shit Princess Irulun does that is pretty damning toward Chani (and by extension Paul's) happiness. The movies frame it differently - but part 3 should illustrate more behind the issues between them. tl;dr there are deeper issues that mean Paul is not able to be responsible for Chani's happiness.

Don't want to spoil it (I've read the novels and seen the film/s)

Dune Prophesy was... dissapointing.

I did not like Dune Part 2. It is pretty but the plot is not good.

Dune is like a hot girl with no brain.

Which movie is like all brain but not hot then?

I am not looking for brains from a movie per se, but an interesting plot.

The end of Part 2 was very rushed and nonsensical. When they captured Chris Walken. They turned the main character into a Mary Sue. His political victory does not feel properly earned.

They butchered Part 2 - it should not have been written that way.

I can think of a few ways it could have ended / introduced the Landsraad that would flow narratively.

I think it's a shame they haven't introduced CHOAM & the Spacing Guild more as big players.

I predict both CHOAM and the Spacing Guild to play a large role in Part 3.

The timejump... dunno how they will handle that.

I think Dune would be better if the director wasn't as faithful to the book. The book is not as great as the hype suggests.

The world of Dune is the good part. But it needs a better plot within that world.

I want to see a new story told within the Dune world.

@Leo Gura The story of the original Butlerian Jihad (fuck, I can't say the word Jihad without thinking about a post you made EONS ago, where you quipped 'panties jihad' - cannot remember the context LOL) might interest you?

How humans went so hard to transhumanism it lead to 'Cogitors' who felt disgusted by generic humans, inserted their brains into robots, gave birth to true AGI and the resultant AGI 'Omnious' went on a rampage and systematically fucked up humans, earth and all human inhabited planets. Humans were slaves essentially. Full capitulation. The Jihad was their revolt lead by a women (hence panties Jihad making me lol so hard back in the day) who's son was murdered by a Cogitor/Titan in front of her. Fast forward carnage. Then resultant ban of 'thinking machines' and leading to the circumstances you see in Dune.

But that backstory isn't written by Herbert - it was added into the Dune universe by his son I think.

There's a lot of material to milk there... and totally fuck up in endless sequels for the next cash cow.

I'm turning myself off my own idea now...

These are my all-time favorite books; I’ve read them many times.

Overall, I’m happy with the movies, there’s plenty that could be better or closer to the books, but they’ve been a treat so far.

What bothered me the most: spoiler alert, was that Alia didn't kill the Baron at the end like she did in the book; in the movie, she isn't even born yet. Also, the way Chani and Stilgar are portrayed. I think they wanted to inject some humor into the film through Stilgar and depict Chani as a strong, independent woman.

Yes I agree, huge departures from the books. I think to appeal to a modern audience and touch base with current trends?

I sort of wish Kynes had a larger part, and the emphasis on the ecology of the planet. But this would be difficult to present via film as a media.

Yeah that's what I thought too.

True I forgot about Kynes… I really missed that too. And why do they make Kynes female when he's actually Chani's father lol..

Nah I haven't read the books just watched the movie. It seems that yeah Paul rushes into it and hurts Chani unnecessarily.

Most media is really bad narrative wise, due to human error but just how they have to simplify plots to have mainstream appeal. I have a lot of hope for AI written entertainment to revolutionize the genre. I cannot stand hollywood blockbusters, I have to get really high to enjoy them. I've been getting more into historical dramas or animes. Anime has way better plot than movies or tv shows most times.
