How do you read news?

13 posts in this topic

I've been years without reading/watching news as I felt they were polluting my mind.

Now, I want to inform myself more about the world but find no high quality unbiased new resources. So any tips/apps for reading news on the phone and start understanding better the world?

There is this body, I should know the requirements of my body. This is first duty.  We have obligations towards others, loved ones, family, society, etc. Without material wealth we cannot do these things, for that a professional duty.

There is Mind; mind is tricky. Its higher nature should be nurtured, then Mind becomes Wise, Virtuous and AWAKE. When all Duties are continuously fulfilled, then life becomes steady. This is the best info on the guy who tried to kill Trump that media won't cover.

If you used Google, I'm sure you'd find many news options with bias-check metrics, even if AI-powered

Tbh I rarely ever paid any attention to the news, basically haven't watched regular tv for over 15 years now. I never found any use in knowing whats happening all over the world or country when its far beyond my needs or reach. Its mostly useless fear-mongering propaganda.

I live a completely different reality than most people around me. Often people talk about whats happening "in the world" or "out there" and i just see all the fear and stress and worry in their eyes, and 90% of the time those big "threats" never come to pass anyway. Even when coronavirus happened, i was still enjoying and living my life in the same way, while everyone else was 6ft deep in fear. Imagine all poor bastards living in the bush not even aware a virus is going around, peacefully ignorant.

I rather tune into the natural world and focus on the immediate reality around me, beyond that its out of my hands.

Yes, this is where I'm coming from and I've been quite happy about that for the last years. However, contemplate in what ways this is limiting you and your understanding of reality.

Actually total disconnection keeps the safety of one's mind, but it's also throwing the baby out with the bathwater. After isolating and cleaning the mind for some good years, what is truly desired is to find high quality channels to evolve your understanding of the world. Doing so is useful for many pursuits and may impact your work, economics, friends and major life decisions.

The NY times, The guardian and BBC news are my go to. However I skim through articles to just keep up with workd events. News truly are 95%+ shock factor random calamities happening on the other side of the world.

You'd do well and keeping an emotional distance when reading the news. It's like an emotional vampire on steroids.

I get what you’re saying, being completely unaware of the world could leave me unprepared for things that actually matter. But for me, the constant barrage of news and social drama is toxic, and it clouds judgment rather than helping it. I'm open to selectively connecting to high‑quality signals that are truly relevant to my life, rather than immersing in general 'world updates.' That way, I protect my mind while staying informed where it counts.

What I am basically describing is embodied, local, reality‑based living, a return to natures way, something humans lived by for 99.9% of history. Indigenous people, villagers, homesteaders, monks, anyone living close to the land, they all navigate life by observing nature, relying on direct experience, dealing with what is actually in their control, and ignoring distant drama. This has real psychological freedom in it. There's deep wisdom in not outsourcing your perception to manufactured narratives.

Today we could benefit in finding a middle way in it all, but I am very selective to whats truly needed.

I am very disconnected from news and media in a similar way.

Perhaps the main difference for me is that the really relevant shit reaches me through family and colleagues.

I hear them chit-chat about the biggest happenings, but I do not engage in news on a day to day basis.

It is far easier to trick someone, than to convince them they have been tricked.
