Reading book is overwhelming

Because I lose a lot of information. And how can I become good at reading? What do you recommend?

@jacknine119 Focus on absorbing the information through repetition. Read over and over again. I also forget things that I read but I discovered that the more times I iterate the information in other words re reading the same thing more I remember it.

@Rishabh R This is great advice :)

Sometimes I find re-reading as Rishabh said a few times, as well as taking notes after one or two paragraphs, helps to cement it in memory.

Another trick I use is forcing myself to nap for 30 minutes, or meditate - then reading again.

Like a reset button.

@Natasha Tori Maru Yeah , I re read the book related to my subject or even self-help/philosophy books.I remember that when I read the first time I don't remember the information but 2nd time a little bit then with third time a bit more and so on.

Thanks.

What books are you reading? Highly technical (eg. for college), non-fiction, self-help, biographies, other? I'm asking because I think the approach varies by type of book.

I generally read non-fiction and biographies. As others mentioned before, I think re-reading is very good, even with something like a biography. More insights arise each time I re-read a good piece, and understanding is deepened.

Moreover, I scribble notes/exclamation marks on the margins. I underline stuff. When I come back to re-read, I know that the highlighted stuff made the greatest impression on me, but then I also look at the non-highlighted stuff to perhaps find more gold. And then at the end of the chapter I usually write down the best insights from the chapter in very short bullet points, all on the page of the book.

For me, at least for non-fiction and biographies, it's all about getting these juicy insights, being inspired, and wanting to act in my life. Focus on what's important. Know why you read. And adjust your "reading methods" accordingly.

Try to enjoy the act of reading. If you focus too much on absorbing it and making it useful you’ll start hating it. And then you’ll stop reading.

@Schizophonia No there is a lot of wisdom in the books.

Most people don't really like reading because it's not natural for humans to read; books don't exist in nature.
I don't use TikTok, but I'm not even sure that reading books is better than using it (btw contrary to what one might think, Gen Zers have a larger brain volume than Gen Xers https://www.sciencealert.com/younger-generations-have-larger-brains-is-that-healthier), because at least TikTok is fairly ego-neutral, whereas a book pushes you to side with the author's ego; their positions, their language elements, and their persona in general; it's anti-holistic; when it's not just common sense for 15 euros; at least if we talk about personal development, spirituality, religions, politic; yopics like that.

That is why most people want a quick fix to their problems and improve their lives without actually doing the work. But reading is far more valuable than consuming what algorithm tells you to. I really love reading - Read approximately 16 or so books in almost 2 years( hard copy and Amazon Kindle combined ). Recently ordered my 17th book. By experience I would say that reading is worth it.

You don't need to read anything to improve your life.

I don't defend Tik Tok, Tik Tok is bad.

So much the better for you

I'm not criticizing reading in itself, just say there is few good books in the in the fields I have mentioned.

Taking summaries is so 2020. Just let AI make a summary for you and focus on the content of the book. If you want tips on this and how to focus, I give coaching.

Books are not useful?

I sort of cannot understand the lack of thought there.

Very hard to accurately retain and transmit complex knowledge through generations without them. A human dies and we loose their intellect, books can assist in retaining and distributing knowledge.

Obviously we have systems, ai, videos etc now. But they are inherently harder to maintain as they do not exist in isolation. One good solar flare will shut down power etc. books were a record keeping method in a way.

Just one of many benefits.
