Oblivion Remastered Just Released

The Total Overhaul mod list is the closest thing we have to a Morrowind remaster right now, and it's surprisingly enjoyable as a starting point.

The graphics actually look insanely good.

Imagine a Morrowind remaster that looks this good. OMG!

I'm curious: How to approach a remaster (or remake) of such an old game? How would you reimagine the experience? Many fans seem to be opposed to the idea, thinking that it would sacrifice what made the original special. I think it'd be worth a shot.

That's true. They would probably screw it up because they would want to make it more accessible and mainstream. So they would dumb it down too much and ruin it.

I have given up hope that anything like Morrowind will ever be made again.

They could a remake look great, but the gameplay would all be dumbed down.

I'm personally looking forward to Skywind. A remake along those lines made by a third-party would be worth a shot imo.

I'd say the world, story, lore and characters are the "soul" of the game, as opposed to some of the ancient gameplay mechanics.

I hate Bethesda so much its unreal

Imagine a culture where big games are made by non-profit organizations, purely as pieces of art for the people

That's the only way such games will ever be made again

Won't happen in our lifetime, something for the post-WW3 reconstruction era

The gameplay is what makes Morrowind so good, that you don't have quest markers and the like

Skywind will probably make it so that you can play it that way, I hope they do

That's not possible because games are very expensive and risky to make and require huge profits to offset the risk of making them.

Who would invest $150M into making a game without at least a chance of 5x return? Only a madman.

The last Zelda game cost $150M to make.

Well that's exactly what I mean, it would be in an entirely different culture where there is no one investor making the risk of investment like our current stage orange culture. The huge risk investors have to make nowadays is precisely why games are shit and dumbed down, because lowering risk is a must if you're investing 150M.

I could make the same argument you made against making the ancient pyramids. Only a madman would invest billions to make the pyramids. which is why they aren't made in our stage orange culture. The pyramids were a collectively funded piece of art, funded by the entire society that wasn't based on profit and investment, but purely for the sake of art and God.

That's what I imagine, a culture in the future where beautiful videogames and the like are collectively funded and produced. Which won't happen until we see a cultural revolution.

@Leo Gura Imagine the government making games. Baiscally a competent non-corrupt govenrment can innovate and make stuff many times better than corporations, because they have loads of money and connections. Think about what NASA did. Gov programs gave us most of the amzing tech we have now, privates just took the tech and made profits with it.

That's nonsense. Government cannot make good art.

What to keep and what to discard? Skywind will discard the ancient combat system, it seems. I think it will also include a "purist" mode without quest markers.

2047 can't come soon enough!

Flying to the moon is art. Dutch urbanism is art. Government employs aritsts that do the art.

I get your "no bullshit" approach tot things Leo, but sometimes there has to be place for interpetation and discussion. It depens what art means for you, for some it might be art, for some not. Some fancy video game can be perceived as art by some nerds like us, but for my mother it might be just a bunch of pixels on a screen. Amazing feats of engineering wake the same emotions in me as some Picasso paintings do for some avant-garde art consumers.

I get it, I am also tired of entertaining post-modern fluff of woke fools, but we can exaggerate the other way also.

@Alexop A government engineering project is totally different from creating art. By conflating these things you end up with very wrong ideas of what government can and cannot do.
