Difference between spirituality and philosophy?

29 posts in this topic

I have problems separating these terms.

Is spirituality a subset of philosophy as philosophy also entails practical things like state philosophy, ethics, science theory .. ?

Philosophy is conceptual conjecture about reality. Spirituality is absolute realization.

Just because God loves you doesn't mean it is going to shape the cosmos to suit you. God loves you so much that it will shape you to suit the cosmos.

Okay so philosophy needs spirituality.

Spirituality is practical, philosophy is theoretical. Or in another words, spirituality is to realize the truth, philosophy to get lost in the mind

Actually even spirituality is conceptual.   Actuality is what you want to separate philosophy from.  See the episode "what is actuality" and see if you can grasp the difference between that and imagination.

Spirituality is the tough love that philosophy needs but usually refuses. Socrates at least concluded that he knows nothing, which opens the possibility for direct realization. Know-it-alls are farther from true knowledge than know-nothings.

Spirituality is being, philosophy is understanding. They inform eachother.

Religion is conceptual. True spirituality is the direct source beyond beliefs.

Spirituality is zero conceptual. Is open yourself and merge with the absolute. To break the barrier that keep you imprisoned in the relative. It's more an action than an contemplation. Is to see, not to think, is to erase the veil of the limitation and have an infinite sight. It's to remove all the blockages, all the mental barriers, and become diaphanous, without obstacles, open, fluid, without resistance.

I think they are the same thing , a path to god

spiritual practice are philosophy imo and philosophy is spiritual practice

understanding is key and it needs to make sense to you to understand it

the problem is people skip over the first chapter of philosophy and then go straight to what is beauty and treat it like it can be an objective truth, like are you dumb did you even read chapter 1

I was eluding to what @Moksha was saying- the word spirituality tends to get misinterpreted- (wow - here's something familiar - like the term solipsism!)...so really, its simpler to think about what is actual in terms of what is True.  And Truth is what one seeks, no?   Spirituality ultimately just points to what is True.  But what is true just IS - it is Actual.

Spirituality = Actuality/ First order truth/ Direct experience

Philosophy = Conceptualization (but the closest to the source/Spirituality?)

Yes on spirituality, but unfortunately not on philosophy.  Philosophy traps you within the mind, and spirituality frees you from the mind. In most cases philosophy hinders, rather than helps, direct realization.

Yes, not just the word but the spirituality itself.

I would say it's important to understand philosophy has its value but then one must go beyond philosophy and access the Truth directly.   Here we must be careful because even to call this spirituality can confuse someone looking in.   But then again, we are sitting here talking about Truth, so there are inherent dangers simply doing that.   Ultimately you have to realize that Truth is a slippery beast.  It will attempt to evade you at all costs and masquerade as various things or descriptions- none of which are actually it - even the word actual isn't it.

I think this where @Jannes might be going with this.  We need to very careful with our use of language.   Ultimately since all dualities collapse - it means all words must also collapse.

Yes, great danger, and we have all fallen into it at one point. How many use the word god, infinity, love, really thinking that it is something that they have directly realized, but the reality is that they have absorbed the concept and have made it their own, deceiving themselves? You have to be very honest with yourself in this work. Being able to eliminate everything you have learned from your mind and be left alone with what you have seen, and not with that either, but with what you are seeing. spirituality is now. yesterday's realization is nothing, just a help to be open now. spirituality is an energetic flow, an opening, not knowing things, or remember things.
