Is Rap Music Stage Red? - Sociological Analysis

17 posts in this topic

I've been rewatching the Stage Red episode, trying to understand how the stage works and how it fits into spiral dynamics overall.

One thing I was surprised Leo didn't mention (forgive me if I missed it) is how stage red relates to rap music. Pretty much every aspect of stage red blatantly aligns with the vibe of rap music, and I think rap provides a powerful lens for looking at the intricacies of spiral dynamics.

Rap music is all about power, conquest, egocentrism, brazenness, wealth, being better than others, hating others, "beating the haters," and so on.

These are my questions:

1) Why do people seem to skip stages?

It seems like the most common spiral dynamics transition is stage red to stage orange. Also, the combination of red and orange seems to be very popular among hip hop stars who became successful, such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne, etc. I know that stage red --> stage blue is considered a classical transition -- somebody goes to jail and comes out as a religious fundamentalist -- but the stage red to orange transition seems just as common if not more. Could this be because the individualism of orange feels more familiar to red?

2) Why do people from higher stages such as orange like the vibe and aesthetic of hip-hop?

They're definitely not working on integrating low spiral stages. But they must be aware that it's a lower stage of development, as you don't normally go shoot people and brag about it as a stage orange or above person.

One possibility is that they enjoy the power fantasy and themselves aspire to wealth and power, so they can imagine themselves feeling powerful like the rapper, except through career or business rather than criminality. It may also just be that the genre is fun and people like listening to it for its unique sound. But that still wouldn't explain why the lyrics remain so blatantly stage red and don't adapt to a higher-spiral market.

__________________________________________

These are just some things to think about.

It seems to me like rap is a strange combination of red and orange, and it's interesting from a sociological point of view how it works.

What do you think?

Yes Leo has said it is too. Its obviously stage red and also really stupid if you listen to the lyrics.

I find it it funny how much we criticize religious people on in this forum for leading an epistemologically unquestioned life but rarely mention how stupid the people are who devoted their lives and who's whole personality is wrapped up in a culture that has anthems about fucking hoes and cars and are somehow off limits.

In his book, he makes the distinction between cognitive complexity and symbolic code, and also presents the concept of downward assimilation. To put it as an example: it's possible for a cognitively Blue person to engage with ideas way above Blue (maybe even Yellow), because they have installed the language (symbolic code) of the higher stages, but they are engaging with it in a simplified way which is consistent with their cognitive complexity, "assimilating it downwards". So there is a big potential to fool oneself that one is more complex than one actually is.

Pop music that only sing about partying and drinking are also Stage Red. It also tends to be incredibly simplistic musically (e.g. Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" or Rebecca Black's "Friday"). Metal music that sings about gore (e.g. Cannibal Corpse) is also Red, but some metal music with gore lyrics is also relatively complex musically (e.g. Necrophagist, Suffocation).

So again we can distinguish between aesthetic (and expression) and actual cognitive complexity. Even if I wanted to write a classic brutal death metal album, I would still be the cognitive complexity I am. My relationship to the music could be perhaps also ironic or nostalgic rather than a honest/authentic expression of the values in the music.

More classic examples of Red in music: lyrics about sex and women in 80s hair metal (e.g. Guns and Roses "Welcome to the jungle", essentially every Whitesnake song). Satanism in music, e.g. some early "black" metal (Venom) and thrash metal (Slayer), death metal (Morbid Angel), Norwegian black metal (Mayhem, Emperor, etc.; some of these people actually killed people and burned down churches so you could say they lived the expression of the values).

Most of the honest expression of Red you see happens in teenage years (which is where the examples you've listed and also my examples tend to originate from). You could say teenage years (in the West) is a time where you're authentically Red-Blue and being encouraged by the surrounding society to transition to Blue (authentically) while downward-assimilating code from that society (Orange and Green).

People who are seemingly jumping from Red to Orange might actually only have adopted a simplified version of Orange consistent with their cognition and true code at Blue or so. True authentic expression of Orange might happen later (or earlier depending on what kind of person you are). That's also an explanation for the "Red-Green conflation" phenomena I've described before: teenagers downward assimilating Green code ("just be free yo") to fit their Red true code and cognitive complexity.

I get what you're saying, but I think it's more complex than that.

A teenager in a red society is different from a teenager in a green society, even if they are both teenagers. The red one will likely be violent, prejudiced, egoistic, and behave in other ways characteristic of red. The green one will have some egoistic tendencies, but will have some idea of the relativity of different cultures and beliefs, be tolerant of different ways of thinking, and be more open-minded.

I don't think spiral dynamics stage develops as you grow older in the way you're describing. A teenager raised in a wealthy, forward-thinking Silicon Valley household, for example, is basically born into stage green. They may have some regressive behaviors, but they're definitely not red or blue at any point in their life.

People seem to only increase in spiral stage if 1) they started very low or 2) they try to do so on purpose. If you start at red in American society, you're practically guaranteed to move up at some point in life assuming you don't die first.

The other thing I've observed clearly is that higher education (at least in first-world countries) tends to bring people to green if they pursue it seriously enough for long enough, simply because the academic standards force people to engage in relativity.

As for the yellow and above, though, it's extremely rare. Especially where I would evaluate myself as right now -- yellow moving into turquoise (with some elements of even higher stages and perhaps a slight orange shadow) -- there is basically no one at a similar stage in normal life.

Yes, largely because of downward-assimilation (but yes also "upward-assimilation" which is where you're genuinely pulled up in development by your society; it helps to think of these things and stages in general as statistics and gradients rather than dichotomies).

Ever heard of the phenomena of "Russ" in Scandinavia? How is it that these teenagers essentially party and drink themselves to death over a period of a few months? Your parents might drink a couple of more drinks than usual on New Years Eve, but they're most likely highly controlled; nothing to the same extent as Russ.

More generally, what is the "27-club" about do you think? I have a theory even from my own life which I'll hint towards: I know 3 people who died around that age and all of them were heavily into drugs, one of them into violence and serious crime. I myself was severely into drugs until the year I was turning 21, and later I started seriously investing in future-oriented actions by legimately studying in school/university (something I had only done casually and half-assedly before), something changed.

Even as a 3-year-old?

Ever heard of the phenomena of a "dogmatic", racist or prejudiced socialist, social justice warrior, feminist? Are these usually teenagers or early adults, and if so, why is that?

Let's use a very stark example: does teaching kindergarters (3-year-olds) about gender fluidity and the socioeconomic virtues of equity and diversity, make them Green?

No music style is inherently one specific stage.

Pretty sure God is capable of doing a rap battle that is outside of stage red, just sayin.

The same for many other human beings.

@Carl-Richard I get what you’re saying. This “Russ” thing indeed has elements of red, but not the full package. Red isn’t just about daring behaviors, it’s also about egocentrism, violence, conquest, etc. Teenagers doing crazy stuff is not stage red.

About your second point, yes, I do think even young children can be stage green (in a less mature form).

Rap is dominated by the artists who are at the red stage for sure, but I believe  there are some rappers who aren't mainly on red stage, for example:

Rap is the whole rainbow nowadays but I think it takes its roots and came out of lower stages. Rebelling against oppression. Like punk.

Higher spiral rap is a huge untapped market.

Exactly. It’s starting to bud in the periphery.

The core of red is impulsivity and short-term focus, present-moment concerns, which is what drives the egocentrism ("me and my concerns right now over anyone elses or me in the future or the larger social good or the superego or societal expectations). Drinking, partying, having promiscuous sex, doing wild challenges ("russeknuter"), and of course illegal drug use is common, and violent crime is elevated (violent crime in general peaks at around 18-25 and drops afterwards).

Mhm, and in what way is it less mature? Perhaps that's what I've been describing with the concepts I presented? Downward-assimilation, the distinction between cultural code and cognitive complexity?

In other words, a 3 year old has the cognitive complexity of yes a 3 year old while the cultural code (the language, the terms, the words) of Green was created by individuals with much higher cognitive complexity and our children are fed (or assimilate) dumbed-down versions of those concepts. Just because you have "gender fluidity" in your vocabulary does not mean you have the cognitive complexity at meta-systematic (level 13 in the MHC) where you genuinely see large systemic connections and you can produce original ideas in that domain.

The distinction between cultural code and cognitive complexity is essentially the distinction between semantics and syntax. Just because you can adopt a word or concept does not necessarily mean you see a high level of connections to that concept. A 1-year-old mouthing "mama" does not betray a 80-year-old great grandmother's understanding of "mama". Even in the most simplistic societies, the understanding is miles apart.

@AtmanIsBrahman I think a lot of art is a depiction of our unconscious. Rap music depicts our violent repressed because socially unacceptable fantasies. That's what draw the listeners.

I don't think the idea that stage red is a stage you pass through is accurate. Sure throughout history, the past is generally more violent, although that's debatable given the scale of atrocities possible to commit with the power that technology gives.

However i think what we consider stage red is just another concept for the word evil.

We all have a dark side, consciously or unconsciously that is often times repressed.

With art like rap music we're able to explore it more deeply and freely.

@AtmanIsBrahman I don't think it is possible to have a stage red worldview, in the 21st century. Stage red is animalistic, it views the world in terms of victims and predators.

It's a very primitive stage. Rap music isn't stage red by any means.

Most people we would call stage red these days are brainwashed with science, capitalism, religion, etc... they are mostly stage orange.

Even pure stage blue is very rare these days, to have your whole worldview based on mythology. Most people even if they're religious, are stage orange, because they're brainwashed with materialism as a metaphysics and science through the education system.
