@Wilhelm44 Those are Ultra-marathons and I’ve already stated the best is a woman.

But, at marathons men dominate.

The article uses marathons as the example. Men also dominate at Iron Man too, and cycling, and most endurance sport.

Small women seem best designed for Ultra.

Im willing to be wrong on this. I’d rather find out what’s true. I’m gonna set this aside. Please give me grace to admit I’m wrong or that more nuance is required to clearly speak about this.

@Bjorn K Holmstrom The thing is, they are making a biological argument and working backward. Looking at the physical trates, hormones, hips, endurance. I know first hand women are very strong and capable physically, even if less so than the strongest men.

But, the article doesn’t consider that humans live in a social environment. It’s not just physical ability that leads to task completion.

I'm now reading the paper a bit. It does seem physical focused, but has some sociological considerations; on page 9 about how males are earlier socialized for sports performance and on page 15 about the role of fathers and alloparents enabling female participation.
The article however seems to have skipped these considerations, like you say

But hunting a prey down isnt only about endurance running right?

I mean thats the most important aspect of course but other things count as well.

For the running itself, you may have to chase a little faster or slower sometimes, its probably not like you can settle on one speed. (where women are potentially best at)

Along the chase you might encounter other predators you need to defend against.

Or maybe your prey becomes agressive so you gotta fight.

When going for the kill in the end, how dangerous is that still? If the animal still has a bit of fight in it, being fast and effective is important. Being a little robust when things get out of hand as well.

Yeah, she's obviously an anomaly, even in ultramarathons, still I never would have thought it possible for any woman to beat men in such a feat of extreme endurance.

@Wilhelm44 She is an interesting study. She is obviously well trained, and extremely light.

@Jannes Good point. It’s unclear if the woman did a deep study in how those ancient cultures hunted, what they hunted or how. Not all cultures ran down their prey like a tribe would in an open plein….

Mega endurance might not be required if hunting in a group with intelligent well experienced hunters. In fact when hunting large animals strength and explosiveness could be key…

It would be interesting also to look at the context for why some women hunted in some tribes but not others.

@Bjorn K Holmstrom Yes, and she’s bringing in a lot of modern social stuff that to me makes it clear there is a strong agenda in her work.

Well for large prey this is definitely the number one strategy for some tribes. Humans are exceptional endurance runners because we move on two limbs which is energy saving and can sweat to cool down.

But I mean even in this specific context where endurance is the most important factor, its still not the only thing to consider.

But yeah for everything other then endurance hunting, strength becomes much more important. But maybe you also just need as many people as possible in some situations.

Yeah I think a lot of nuance is missing.

@Jannes A lot of those hunters were intelligent too. They didn’t just run after stuff. They likely conserved their energy and attacked when it made sense, learned to set traps, bait, ambushes. Hunting requires deep intelligence not just strength. It depends on how the tribe developed, geography and its culture too likely.

Humans are intelligent survival machines.

I disagree that men hunting makes them superior to their female counterparts. Women played crucial roles in many of these ancient societies I am likely sure.

Men being physically more powerful doesn’t make them superior. I fact, these men often hunted animals which were physically stronger than man.

Though, I see the importance of combatting male bias in our cultural story, in our older foundational social sciences.

He received over 10 warnings for name-calling and insults.

Shame. Please don't force us to ban you. We do not like banning anyone, but constantly insulting others will get you banned.

Yes yes yes, but there is a specific form of hunting that boils down to running an animal down to exhaustion where it is literally laying there paralyzed and unable to move. Of course searching for traces is included in that.

Have I said that? Who are you disagreeing with?

Well for one birthing and raising kids is no less important than providing. That would be a weird bias to have.

And second, strictly for the providing part, I am sure women on top of that played their part as well. Most calories came from harvesting for example. But in hunting specifically men will have a light to a big edge for the reasons I layed out and so likely hunted more. (not necessary exclusively)
